A BRILLIANT start to the 2014/15 season was had by Helston on Saturday as they ran in six tries away at Stithians.

Their dominant first half performance made the difference in the Tribute Cornwall One match as Helston scored four tries in the opening 40 minutes, giving them a bonus point and a 22-0 lead at the break.

Stithians proved to be stiffer opposition in the second half, but by this point the damage had been done.

Helston began strongly with the forwards driving the ball into the host’s half as they piled on the attacking pressure, which would lead to the first try which Matt Penrose scored.

Momentum remained with the visitors as Stithians found it difficult to counter their strong running game.

By the time the whistle had blown to signify the half’s end, three more tries had been chalked up for Helston with Craig Saunders, Paul Saberton and Ross Williams opening their accounts for the season.

The break allowed Stithians to regroup and return to the field looking stronger and scored a try themselves.

Both sides then exchanged tries to set up an exciting last 15 minutes.

However, the Helston forwards refreshed themselves and wrestled back the initiative, pressing hard to open up space for the backs.

This play brought about the final try as Peter Mabbott went over as Stithian’s defence was opened up.
