Sidmouth 38 Camborne 48

Camborne came on strong in the final quarter to win a thrilling end to end encounter with Sidmouth who sank to the bottom of the South West One table with this defeat, writes Martin Symons.

Stalwart Martin Woolcock and Cameron Bone came into the Cherry & Whites starting line up on the flanks and both did well against a lively home back row.

After Grant Thirlby had given ‘Town’ the lead early on Sidmouth scored the 1st try of the game which was converted before scrum half Jason Jackson darted through the cover to send full back Joe Parma racing over. Thirlby’s straightforward conversion made the score 7-10.

In the 2nd quarter the spirited home side added 12 unanswered points but the dominant Camborne pack then drove over from a line out for flanker Bone to touch down and cut the deficit.

Before half time Thirlby found the posts with a well judged penalty for 19-18 at the break.

Sidmouth grabbed a converted score almost from the resumption but ‘Town’ countered with a pushover try from a scrum dotted down by No 8 James Goldsworthy. A third penalty success from Thirlby minutes later levelled matters at 26-26.

Again the home side regained the advantage through their speedy backs but when Alex Ducker squeezed over wide out their lead was trimmed to only 2 points.

The Cherry & Whites then turned the screw driving from a line out in the clubhouse corner for Sam Bartle to touch down on the back of an unstoppable maul. Replacement scrum half David Mankee’s superb conversion from a wide angle made it 33-38.

Soon after left wing Ducker seized the ball in his own half and set off past several tacklers for a spectacular try. Hooker Bartle then repeated the dose from another line out catch and drive to put ‘Town’ out of sight at 33-48.

The home side bagged a consolation try on the final whistle but could not prevent the Cherry & Whites victory that sees them climb to 3rd spot in the table.Camborne put their 21 game unbeaten home League run on the line this Saturday when sixth placed Hornets visit the Recreation Ground
