CALLINGTON 5

PORTHLEVEN 2

Porthleven's youngsters put in yet another promising performance against title contenders Callington on Saturday, but Dennis Annear's side were undone by some lax defending which saw them concede three late goals.

Not only did it end badly, but it started badly for Porthleven, who went behind as early as the second minute when a sequence of three Callington corners resulted in a loose ball in the box which Mike Lucas poked into the back of the net.

Port, who travelled with a bare eleven players, forced their way back into the game and had their first shot on goal after 20 minutes, when Dan Tarrant's effort was palmed away for a corner by Steve Parker in the Callington goal.

Kirk Smith dragged his shot across the face of the goal, but Dean Mason's one on one with Porthleven player-manager Dennis Annear looked certain to see the Marshmen double their lead, only for the striker to place his shot wide of the post.

Port came back at Callington, with Tom Annear's shot drifting wide and a rasping drive from Freddie Williams clearing the crossbar.

Tarrant looked to have equalised, but his header was cleared off the line by Callington's Chris Locke.

And Port looked to have paid a heavy price for the miss when minutes later Callington broke away down the right with Lucas, and his cross found the head of Sam Stevens lurking at the back post to nod in.

Stung into action Port pressed hard for a way back into the game, and almost instantly they had it.

Williams was brought down in the box, the referee pointed to the spot, and up stepped Tom Annear to hammer in the spot kick.

It got better for Port, who drew level ten minutes after half time when Jordan Annear broke clear of the Callington defence and drilled an unstoppable 20 yard effort into the roof of the net to make it 2-2.

But the Fishermen were level for all of a minute.

Fergus Nevin headed in a corner to make it 3-2, and a late penalty for a dubious foul on Mike Stevens saw the same player step up and convert the spot kick at the second time of asking.

Callington completed the scoring five minutes from time when Dennis Mason's shot cannoned back off the upright and straight to the feet of Norman, who calmly slotted in the fifth.

Porthleven: D Annear, Shainberg, McCardie, Tarrant, Best (Kay 80), Hawkins, J Annear, T Annear (c), Williams, Dawson.
