FOOTBALL: First point for Wellington under Jamie Ward
12:42pm Sunday 21st October 2012 in Sport
Wellington ended their run of defeats and picked up their first point under new manager Jamie Ward with a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Keynsham at the Playing Field yesterday.
After their shattering defeat in Bristol last week, when they conceded three goals in injury time, Wellington picked themselves up and were good value for the result.
They got the Toolstation league, division one game off to a flying start by taking the lead after only three minutes thanks to the determination of skipper Leon Taswell.
He robbed a Keynsham defender, burst forward to the bye-line and his pull-back was neatly converted by young strike partner Luke Redrup.
The visitors had the chance to equalise in the 20th minute when Taswell was harshly judged to have handled a cross and the referee pointed to the penalty spot despite protests that the offence had been committed outside the area.
But Wellington felt justice had been done when keeper Paul Gibbins flung himself to his left to save the spot kick by Chris Lewis.
The visitors were not to be denied, however, and equalised shortly after the interval as Danny May skipped past a defender to shoot home the equaliser.
Both sides pressed for the next goal but the game really exploded into action in the last five minutes.
Lewis atoned for him penalty miss by shooting Keynsham into the lead, only for Wellington to equalise in the 89th minute when central defender Scott Holland, who recently re-joined the club, scored with a thumping header from Taswell’s cross.
The home side could then have snatched victory with both Luke Cole and Taswell going close right at the death.
