Brean team are victorious at Weston Pro Am
2:00pm Thursday 18th October 2012 in Sport
A BREAN team led by professional Andrew March were the winners of the inaugural Weston Super Mare GC Pro Am last week.
Eamonn Wynne, Dave Bradley and Matt Haskins alongside March dovetailed to perfection as they notched up a 15 under par team score of 125.
They dropped their only shot of the day at the short 16th but some excellent putting from the whole team at various points of the round kept the score moving in the right direction. Bradley's final putt that dropped on the 18th meant they posted a 15 under par total and then had an anxious wait to see if they would hold top spot as the other teams completed their rounds.
It proved to be good enough by a single stroke and March also enjoyed a good day in the Pro Individual event as he finished in fourth place.
He completed the Weston course in 68 strokes, two under par, as he trailed the winner Andrew Sherborne (The Kendleshire) by four shots. Fellow Brean Professional Roy Baker was also competing in what was his first ever Pro Am. He suffered a poor finish to his round but still returned as respectable 76 to collect his first pay cheque as he ended just outside the top ten of the Individual event.
Brean GC gave a good account of themselves in the Quad Cup at Wedmore last week but ended up in fourth place behind their opponents Wedmore, Weston and Tall Pines. Weakened somewhat due to player unavailability they gallantly battled away but often seemed to end up on the losing side of close results meaning they collected the wooden spoon overall. They hope for better luck next year when the competition is hosted by Weston Super Mare GC.
The last Seniors home match of the season fell foul of the wet weather last Tuesday when the game with Oake Manor was called off early in the morning due to a waterlogged course.
