FOOTBALL: Trophy success for Tiverton veterans
Tiverton'S veterans clinched the Emerton-Court Trophy after a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Churston in the final at Dainton Park on Monday.
The result came down to the last hole of the last match, where Bill Tobin made the crucial par that sealed Tiverton's win. Tobin and his partner Graham Dyson had fought back from three down to make it all-square after 16.
Their opponents won the 17th to go 1 up and with the overall score sitting at 2½-1½ to Tiverton, the final was heading for a play-off. But Tobin’s par won the 18th and gave Tiverton the extra half point needed for victory.
Earlier, Ed Tansey and Mike Hurley won 2&1 while Gerry Franklin and John Phripp triumphed 3&2. Ian Brierley and Mike Eastmond halved while Derrick Barrett and Rod Wiltshire went down 3&2.
Tiverton overcame Staddon Heights, Saunton, Stover and Torquay on their journey to the final. It was the fourth time they had won Devon’s premier knock-out for over-60s.
n Nixie Acfield clinched the men’s Tommy Tucker Scratch Cup after a hard-fought 2&1 win over Jim Bray in the final on Sunday. Bray held the early lead after a birdie on the 1st but Acfield chipped in for a miraculous half on the 4th to stay in touch at one down.
Acfield won the 8th, 11th and 14th while Bray took the 12th and 15th as the match went to the last three holes all-square. Acfield won the 16th with a five and the 17th with a four to secure the cup.
The five-handicapper beat Keith Williams, Martin Selby and Cameron Bundy before knocking out Rhys Cruse on the 19th in the semi-finals. Bray defeated Dean Farmer, Andy Bowers, Chem Austin and Simon Waddington on his way to the final.
n Lloyd Sampson and his son Charlie won the men's Summer Foursomes thanks to a resounding victory over Tim Durrant and Mark Woodman in the final on Saturday.
The Sampsons won eight holes on the trot from the 2nd to be eight up after nine, before their opponents conceded after both pairs drove on the 10th.
The Sampsons beat Neil Forward and Shaun Vickery, Dean Reed and Charlie Durnan, Alby Cruse and Gary Tucker, Lee Scott and Paul Bowler and Cameron Bundy and Gary Taylor en route to the final.
Durrant and Woodman overcame Roger Norton and Mike Eastmond, Peter Boax and John Sampson, Norman Ford and Ken Kidd, Ben Hearn and Jay Buckingham and Alex Gibson and Simon Budden during their passage to the final.
Bridget Holland, Stacey Ford and Chris Bacon won the Lady Vice-captain’s Day competition. The trio posted a nett 68 in Anto Hajduk’s Texas scramble event, which raised £120 for Unite.
