FOOTBALL: Watchet hitting rich vein of form
WATCHET are on a high as they go into today’s Somerset Senior Cup clash at Street reserves (2.30pm).
The Red and Blacks finally found the goals they had been threatening when they swept to a 5-1 victory over St George Easton in Gordano in the Errea County league at the War Memorial Ground last weekend.
And the result also underlined the defensive organisation manager Steve Perkins has brought to his side as they conceded for the first time in five matches.
Perkins said: “It was a very good performance and I couldn’t have asked for more. The attack looks strong, the defence is solid and the nice thing is that the work we are doing on the training ground is being transferred to the pitch.”
Watchet were 2-0 in the first 15 minutes against St George Easton and it could easily have been three or four.
Tayler Maddock opened the scoring and it wasn’t long before Brian Hall also found the target.
Watchet’s mixture of slick attacking and cool defence saw them extend their lead to 3-1 through Royston Green before the visitors nicked one back before half time.
That goal only served to concentrate the minds of the Watchet players and Hall and Green both got their names on the scoresheet again by the final whistle.
Another bonus for Perkins was the performance of 16-year-old substitute Sam Steel who was outstanding in midfield.
