Wally is the winner on Captains Day
1:00pm Thursday 4th October 2012 in Sport
WALLY Pape claimed the silverware on offer in the re-arranged Captains Day at Brean after his nett 68 proved to be the best of the day. This also secured him Division Three success one ahead of Graham Foy.
Second Division winner Paul McLanaghan was Pape's nearest challenger overall as he matched his score of 68 but had a slightly poorer back nine score.
Dave Lockwood was the runner up in that sector with a nett 69. Division One was won with the score of nett 70 returned by Alan Cooke leaving him two clear of Steve Jones in second. Jenny Vaughan pipped Shelia Rouse to take the Ladies Captains Cup. As is tradition with Captains Day at Brean the afternoon consisted of a Cross Country Scramble over a nine hole layout devised by the Professionals.
This event provided a close finish with a countback needed to separate the leading two trio's. Dennis May, David Hunter and Nigel Elis were deemed the winners as they just edged out Ali Haskins, Matt Haskins and Steve Mason after both had had nett 29's. Over the day much money was again raised for the Captains chosen Charity for the year which is locally based PETAL, The Christine Woodberry Memorial Trust.
The Seniors have had a barrage of competitions completed in the last week or so with Tony Tissington winning the Veterans Trophy after 41 point haul and Pat Mullholland taking the Seniors Medal with a nett 70 while Barrie Tucker recorded another win in the Seniors Chairman's Cup with 36 points in some tough conditions.
Brean's two PGA Professionals didn't fare too well in the Wormald and Partners G&S PGA Matchplay last week. Andrew March tasted defeat on the final hole whilst David Haines won to move into the Quarter Finals. That was as far as he would get as he lost the following morning to the eventual winner Ed Goodwin (Cirencester).
Both Haines and March now line up in the first G&S PGA Medal of the winter season on their home turf this coming Wednesday and are joined by a Roy Baker who has just been accepted onto the PGA Training programme.
