FOOTBALL: Wellington lose again in Toolstation league
8:40pm Sunday 30th September 2012 in Sport
Wellington’s poor run continued with a 3-1 defeat by Corsham in the first division of the Toolstation league at the Playing Field yesterday.
It was new manager Jamie Ward’s first home game in charge and, after a pair of odd-goal away defeats, there was cause for optimism against a side who had only picked up eight points from seven games themselves.
But Wellington’s overall performance will have given him plenty to think about as he prepares for another home game this Saturday when the Tangerines look to complete an early season double over newly-promoted Cheddar.
Corsham created the better openings early on with new young keeper Sam Williamson pulling off a superb reaction save to keep out Matt Jenkins’ downward header after 26 minutes.
But it was Wellington who made the breakthrough nine minutes later when Mark Clunie played the ball over the top and young striker Luke Redrup shrugged off a defender before coolly slotting the ball home.
The second half got off to a dramatic start with what must be one of the worst misses ever seen at the Playing Field.
Corsham striker Dan King was sent clear and rounded Williamson to leave himself completely alone in front of goal only to roll the ball wide of the target.
Almost immediately Wellington nearly increased their lead when skipper Leon Taswell stretched to convert a low cross by Redrup but could only send the ball wide of the far post. Then Andy Butler had a header from a corner cleared off the line.
Corsham looked stronger as the game wore on and the luckless King played a part in their equaliser after 64 minutes when he was sent crashing to the ground by Williamson and Ross Lye smashed home the resulting penalty.
The next goal was always going to be crucial and it was the visitors who scored it after 78 minutes with a fine piece of improvisation by Jamie Moss, whose quickly-taken free-kick caught the home side napping.
The Wiltshire side then sealed the points five minutes from time when a low cross from the left was neatly converted by substitute Dan Baker.
