GOLF: Two holes-in-one ... in ten minutes
TWO former captains of Tiverton Golf Club had a hole-in-one in a competition on Saturday – less than 10 minutes apart.
Tony Allsopp aced the 162-yard 14th with an 8-iron during the Chairman's Cup.
Not to be outdone, Andy Brice stepped up and repeated the feat with a 9-iron in the following group.
For five-handicapper Allsopp, it was his fifth hole-in-one and his first on the 14th.
It was seven-handicapper Brice's third ace and his second on that hole.
Their achievements won each player £150 in bar and pro shop vouchers at the club.
Allsopp ended up shooting a level-par gross 71 but agonisingly missed out on winning the cup after Bob Tye pipped him on a countback.
Both players posted a nett 66 but Tye's late birdies on the 15th, 17th and 18th swung it in his favour.
Results: 1 Bob Tye (72-6=66); 2 Tony Allsopp (71-5=66); 3 Lloyd Sampson (74-7=67); 4 Martin Selby (72-4=68); 5 Julian Partridge (82-14=68); 6 Gerry Franklin (79-10=69); 7 Richard Swarbrick (83-13=70); 8 Mark Davitt (85-15=70); 9 Heath Ellis (80-10=70); 10 Dave Milton (85-15=70).
Tony Allsopp, fresh from his hole-in-one, carded 39 stableford points to clinch the men's Lewis Tankard on Monday.
Allsopp beat Steve Jack by two and had his handicap cut from five to four.
Results: 1 Tony Allsopp (39); 2 Steve Jack (37); 3 Terry White (35); 4 Dan Smith (34); 5 Mark Reeves (34); 6 Dean Farmer (34).
Jan Carroll carded 38 points to win the ladies' September Stableford.
She topped Bronze Division One, qualified for the Goodwin Trophy and had her handicap cut from 22 to 21.
Results: Silver Division – 1 Jackie Leonard (37); 2 Maureen Postles (36); 3 Rachel Bray (34). Bronze Division One – 1 Jan Carroll (38); 2 Rosemary Venner (35); 3 Ros Williams (34). Bronze Division Two – 1 Janet Derrett (35); 2 Wendy Frost (34); 3 Jackie Slocombe (31).
Derrick Barrett posted a nett 70 to win the Veterans' Challenge Cup on Tuesday, edging out Keith Morgan and Ian Wilson on a countback.
Results: 1 Derrick Barrett (81-11=70); 2 Keith Morgan (86-16=70); 3 Ian Wilson (87-17=70); 4 Ian Brierley (78-7=71); 5 Ken Nicholas (89-18=71); 6 David Wright (88-16=72).
Tiverton missed out on securing the inaugural Exe League title after finishing level with East Devon on 34 points.
After the points won in each club's home fixture were taken away, East Devon came out on top.
It was a blow for Tiverton, who won the events at home and at East Devon.
In the final round at Woodbury Park, Tiverton scored 38, 32 and 29 in the foursomes and 42, 39 and 33 in the fourballs.
Tiverton provided 23 of the 68 players in the Junior Open at Honiton on Saturday – and came home with a number of prizes.
Harry Konig claimed the scratch prize with his gross 79.
Jimmy Heard won Division Two with a nett 60, which reduced his handicap from 26 to 21, while Jay Scott was third on 67.
Sianne Leary was the runner-up in the girls' event with 76.
In the 10-hole stableford for non-CONGU players, Maddie Esau was second in Division Three with 22 points while Jack Green won Division Four with 31.
The 100-mile cycle ride by Tiverton members Andy Pryce, Lee Scott, Paul Ward and Simon Budden earlier this month raised £2,450 for the Captain's Charity – Hospiscare's Pine Lodge day centre.
The quartet completed the circuit between Tiverton, Enmore Park and Minehead on the day of the clubs' MET Shield match.
