SKITTLES: Bradninch begin defence in good style
Bradninch C Club made a good start in their bid to retain their Sampford Peverell and district league championship.
They beat last year’s runners-up Elmore Club 480-427.
Performance of the week came from Roger Lucas of Bradninch RBL, who posted a 4-spare 83 – only to finish on the losing side.
Results: Division A: Bradninch C Club 480, Elmore Club 427; Barmy Army 387, Barley Knockons 356; The Ponies 366, Settler Boys 379, Calverleigh 383, Bellies 412; Globetrotters 463, Bickleigh 415; Globe Appley 353, The Beare 358; Queens Head 320, Brass Monkeys 266; Manor House Hotel 344, Castaways 355.
High scores: 75 - Chris Acton (Bradninch C Club, 3 spares); 74 - Gary Chappell (Bradninch C Club, 3 spares); 73 - Ed Andress (Bradninch C Club, 3 spares); 71 - Richard Clarke (Elmore Club); 70 - M Beedell (Globetrotters, 3 spares).
Reports: Barmy Army took charge over newly-promoted Barley Knockons, as they won five out of six legs, the other being shared. The Ponies were level with Settler Boys after three legs, but the boys won the last three to take away the points.
Calverleigh found Bellies on form, and only won two legs. With the visitors taking 24 pins over the second and third legs that was game over. Globetrotters, led by anchor man M Beedell with a 3-spare 70, convincingly beat Bickleigh who just could not win a leg.
New boys to Division A, Globe Appley, narrowly failed to make their first game a winning one as they went down by three pins to The Beare. Queens Head’s alley is still proving to be a challenging experience, as Brass Monkeys found this week, losing heavily while playing one man short.
Manor House Hotel had a good start in their game against Castaways, as they won the first two legs, but had no more success until the last leg, and by that time the birds had flown.
Division B: Oggies 413, Hare & Hounds 381; Uplowman 360, Globe Appley B 383; Catherine Wheel 365, Lumberjacks 391; Welcome Rebels 330, Barley Mow 314; Ayshford Arms 319, The Merriemeade 332; Huntsham A 354, Redwoods 369; All Blacks 439, Bullocks 395; Crossways 427, Bradninch RBL 408. High scores: 83 - Roger Lucas (Bradninch RBL, 4 spares); 69 - Harold Pearce (Oggies 3 spares); 67 - Dave Greening (All Blacks, 3 spares); 65 - Alan Mason (Crossways 2 spares).
Division C: Half-Way House 370, Ringers 298; The Travellers 414, Ashill Inn 377; The Farmers 377, Booze Cruzers 403; Jims Boys 386, Lion Cubs 357; White Horse 349, The Agri-Nuts 358; Tiverton RBL, bye; The Dogz conceded game to Manor Magic; Tiverton Chiefs 362, Rose & Crown 366.
