Brean Golf Club latest
BREAN Golf Club Seniors had a busy week of events as they caught up with some weather -affected fixtures from earlier in the season.
In a week consisting of three matches plus a Stableford, they enjoyed two wins and one defeat. Unfortunately, the defeat came in the biggest of the three games – the Seniors Somerset Bowl Semi-Final. After being washed out the previous week, the match ran its full course, this time at Worlebury, but the Clevedon Seniors proved too strong for the Brean team and ran out winners 3-2.
The previous day, the team had a confidence-boosting home win by 5-1 in the second leg of the FosseBrean Trophy against Fosseway. Trailing by two points after the first leg at Fosseway, they turned on the style to end up victors overall by 7-5.
On Thursday, they were on the road again as they travelled to Cannington where, agai,n success was tasted as they won by 3.5 to 2.5 to slightly soften the blow of the semi-final loss.
Pat Mullholland was the winner of the Seniors Stableford with 37 points. He beat George Stratford on countback over the last nine holes after they both scored 37 points.
Mullholland was again the winner of the Pro Shop Stableford held on Saturday. This time, 35 points was good enough to beat Neil Barker by three. A new Super Series event is underway with the first competition being played last Sunday. Mats Mattsson was the winner and the early Series leader with a score of 37 points ahead of Gordon Wheelaghan on 36.
Both Avalon League teams are completing their season now and the Division 2 side had a double-header weekend with games on both days. On Saturday, they were away to Taunton Vale and won by 3-2 before completing their solid 2012 campaign with a rearranged fixture at Enmore Park. This game, however, turned out to be their worst result of the year as they succumbed to their hosts 5-0. The Division 6 side were also on the road at Frome and went down to a 4-1 defeat. This result leaves them potentially needing some points from their final home game next week to ensure their safety in the Division for 2013.
Both of Brean’s PGA Professionals will tee it up in the Race to Woodbury Park Championship which is a prestige West Region PGA season ending event in early September. The field is made up of the top 50 in the Order of Merit following the conclusion of the West Region Championship which was played at Saunton last week. David Haines enjoyed a good closing round over the tougher East course at the North Devon venue to move up the field and finish in a tie for 21st. This moved him up to 23rd on the Order of Merit after a steady season in the qualifying events. March didn’t play in the final event at Saunton but will also take part in the finale after being offered a Sponsors Invitation to the event after just ending outside a prized top 50 spot.
Results: Seniors Stableford – 1 Pat Mullholland 37pts, 2 George Stratford 37, 3 Jim McLauchlan 34. Pro Shop Stableford – 1 Pat Mullholland 35, 2 Neil Barker 32. Super Series – 1 Mats Mattsson 37, 2 Gordon Wheelghan 36, 3 Andy Chapple 34.
