Uxella League pre-season cup finals
1:00pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport
WITH a few days to go until the Bridgwater and District Sunday League kicks off, last weekend saw two pre-season curtain-raiser cup finals played at Bridgwater Town’s Fairfax Park.
The morning session saw the all-conquering Red Tile, winners of all four trophies available to them for the past two seasons, take on last season's Division 2 Champions, Grasshoppers, in the President’s Cup Final.
The first half was a surprisingly even affair being reflected in a 1-1 scoreline at the interval.
Then, early in the second period, Tile raced away from their opponents by storming to a 5-1 advantage.
However, the plucky Hoppers underdogs refused to buckle and clawed the scoreline back to 5-3 and also had a further strike disallowed for offside.
The Tile woodwork was also tested before they eventually managed to kill off the contest with a sixth strike in the closing period of the game to make the final result 6-3 to the favourites.
A hat-trick for former Grasshopper Jack Taylor plus a brace from Simon Bone and one from Damon Jennings won the trophy yet again for Tile. The Hoppers replied through two goals from Jack Winter and a penalty successfully converted by veteran John Wall.
The afternoon session then saw the Referees Cup Final between last season’s Fair Play Award winners Huntspill Crowns and Sportsmanship Award winners Knowle Dynamos.
A closely-fought affair eventually saw Huntspill claim the trophy with a narrow 3-2 victory, despite a Pete Boot strike and a penalty from Josh Batt for Knowle.
