Berwick victory keeps Somerset Rebels in the hunt
7:30pm Monday 20th August 2012 in Sport
HIGH-FLYING Somerset Rebels kept up the pressure at the top of the Premier League with their second victory over Berwick Bandits in the space of a week.
Following a mixed bag of results on their tour of Scotland the previous weekend, the Rebels were looking to do the double over Berwick at the Oaktree Arena on Friday night (August 17).
And superb performances from the consistent Jason Doyle (13+1), James Wright (15+1) and Jesper Monberg (11+1) sealed a 53-41 win to cement their impressive second place in the league.
The Bandits arrived in Somerset with a full septet, with new signings, Nicki Barrett, and Micky Dyer filling two places left in the injury depleted Bandits side, and they were completed by Newcastle Diamonds Stuart Robson as a guest for Ashworth.
At the same time, the Rebels tracked guests Carl Wilkinson and James Sarjeant and operated rider replacement for Kyle Newman, Tom Perry and Sam Masters respectively, who were all on World Under-21 duty.
The Rebels, despite an early reverse in Heat 2, were always in control of the match, and by Heat 6 had opened up an eight-point lead, which was then pushed to ten points in Heat 9.
With only one away fixture left for the Rebels, at Scunthorpe on Bank Holiday Monday, the Rebels will now concentrate their efforts into ensuring they put as many home points into the bag as possible as they push for a top two finish for the end of season play-offs.
Plymouth will provide the next home opponents, but not before the Oaktree Arena hosts the Premier League Pairs Championship, on Friday (August 24), on the eve of the British Grand Prix.
