CRICKET: Luke turns it on for Ashbrittle in Somerset league
IN-FORM leg-spinner Luke Williams grabbed 5-48 in 12 overs to earn Ashbrittle a 27-run victory over Belvedere in Division One of the Best Western Shrubbery Hotel Somerset league.
Chasing Ashbrittle’s total of 190-8, Belvedere were dismissed for 163. For Ashbrittle, Williams (47) and Sheppard (35) provided an excellent opening partnership while Summerfield hit 36.
Very few other matches were played in any league but Wellington stayed top of the division thanks to a nine wicket victory over Purnell’s who were bowled out for 73.
Getting the game on was a testament to the sheer hard work of Simon Rudd, Richard Henwood and others in their quest to overcome the elements.
Paul Short asked Purnells to bat first and was immediately rewarded as Luke Desave took wickets with the first two balls of the match bowling Brooks and having Nolan trapped in front.
Gregory steadied matters for the Bristol side - who have now lost six matches in a row at Wellington - only to be bowled by a in-swinger from Neil Hendy just after the first drinks break.
Rob Moysey used the drying pitch to pocket 4-19 in nine fine overs of leg spin as Purnells folded in the face of the varied Wellington attack.
This left Wellington with a tricky half hour session to bat before tea and Purnells bowled and fielded with energy and vigour.
But by the interval Wellington had moved along to 31-1 from 11 overs with Paul Short and Alex Sparks at the crease.
After a heavy shower during the tea break Short (29 not) and Sparks (41 not) set about the bowling in an unbeaten stand of 66.
The winning four was hit with 19.5 overs bowled and Wellington had the game in the bag by 6pm.
