TWENTY-EIGHT seniors from Windwhistle Golf Club attended the 4Ball Better Ball competition on Monday and the fine weather saw some fine scores.
Tony Johnson's team managed to score on every hole and returned a respectable 42 points. Their lead was short lived as two further teams returned 44 points. An astonishing 24 points on the front 9 by Andy Beale's team made them favourites at the half way stage, but they were beaten on the back 9 by Alan Davis's team who recorded 22 points in both halves.
Results: 1 Alan Davis and Maurice Arnold 44pts (back 9 = 22); 2 Andy Beale and Bernie Skeels 44pts (back 9 = 20); 3 Tony Johnson and Norman Markby 42pts.
The Senior match team travelled to Radstock to play Fosse Way in a friendly match. Captain Norman Markby and partner Les Hodder were first off and successfully overcame their opposition to give Windwhistle some hope of victory. The ascendancy was lost however with the next two games being lost. Richard Forster and Barry Singleton raised hopes in the fourth game to level at 2-2, but the final two games ended in defeat, Fosse Way winning by 4 -2.
Results: Norman Markby & Les Hodder beat Button & Reeves by 2 holes; George Willerton & Mick Aldridge lost to Rowell & White by 3 & 2; Mike Light & Phil Hunt lost to Blacker & Bendle by 8 & 7; Richard Forster & Barry Singleton beat Curtis & Lester by 6 & 4; Reiner Winkler & Keith Branchflower lost to Nowell & Edgell by 6 & 5; John Bonney & Geoff Dean lost to Ticehurst & Cage by 1 hole.
With 28 players available on Wednesday, the day's format was a 4 man Texas Scramble. The early starters had the better of the weather, and the two winning sides were amongst them. John Bonney successfully led his team to victory with 8 under par, nett 61. In second place with nett 64 was Sid Crisp's side.
Results: 1 John Bonney; Dave Bond, T.Frost & Tony Stenhouse 61; 2 Sid Crisp; Andy Beale, Mike Mosser & Mike King 64.
The Seniors week finished on Friday with the monthly qualifying stableford competition. Thirty-two members participated in adverse conditions with strong easterly winds. The result was that only one player managed a score of better than par. In a keen contest in Division One, three players were within one point, with Alan Davis securing the win. In Division Two, Les Hodder scored 37 points, beating his nearest rivals by two points.
Results: Division One: 1 Alan Davis 34pts; 2 Chris Basterfield 33pts; 3 Mike Cox 33pts. Division Two: Les Hodder 37pts, 2 Stuart Pope 35pts; 3 A. Beale 35pts.
