Burnham claim solid win after all-round team performance
7:40am Friday 6th July 2012 in Sport
BURNHAM secured a well earned win over Uphill Castle thanks to contributions from several key members of the team.
Captain Pete Harris won another toss and inserted Uphill on a wicket that had benefited from the protection of the covers.
The batsman started positively but it was Mike Green who made the breakthrough, clean bowling Bliss for 11.
Opposition captain Williams soon followed, thanks to a nonchalant caught and bowled from Shalli Kathait. Wickets then proved hard to come by, but so did runs, as Hodder and Tasker dug in against Burnham's experienced and varied attack.
Robbie Driver, Kathait (4-24)and Green in his second spell, as well as some excellent fielding, restricted Uphill to the odd single and risky boundary.
Yet again though it was spinner, Brian Brogden (4-41) who benefitted from the applied pressure and he removed Hodder for 57. Tasker (52) soon followed, victim to Kathait thanks to the safe hands of Brad House.
Wickets tumbled and only Dibben (13 not out) provided resistance to restrict Uphill to 180-9.
In reply, Burnham lost opener House in the third over but Kathait and Bloodworth attacked, sending the ball to the boundary whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Uphill responded as Chapman removed Bloodworth in his first over for 28 but Kathait (49) continued to attack until he fell with 94 on the board in the 15th over.
Julian Stearnes and Robbie Driver rebuilt and added another 40, before Stearnes, who had looked close to his best form, holed out in the deep.
Driver (47 not out) saw him side home with contributions from Harris and Dave Steer to secured victory in the 38th over.
On Saturday, Burnham travel to Bridgwater, looking to make up more ground at the top of the table.
