THE annual Brean Golf Club Open week saw a range of competitions being contested over the past seven days and many players enjoyed the improved weather competing for the prizes on offer.

The first event was an Individual Stableford event and this was won by visitor Geraint Davies, from South Wales. He notched 39 points and relegated Brean’s club champion, Roy Baker, to the runners-up spot after he had returned 37 points.

The second event was again an individual one but this time the scoring was Medal.

A close finish ensued in this and a countback was needed to separate Martyn Cahill and Steve Jones who both had net 72s. Jones was declared the winner on the back nine.

A disappointingly small number of players took part in the Threeball Scramble and none who did could keep up with the Jones’s. Steve, again, found himself in the winners’ enclosure and was accompanied by brother, Paul, and Uncle Eric in a comfortable success.

Saturday’s Bowmaker format meant all three players had to be at the top of their game if they were to taste success.

A few teams struggled as all three players were required to score on six of the holes in the tougher Medal format. One team, consisting of Steve Mason, Nigel Hodges and Matt Haskins, shone through as they romped to a five-shot victory after a superb score of 123. Taking second spot on the day were the trio of Mike Porter, John Mardon and Roger Phillips.

The Monthly Stableford for May ended with Craig Wheelaghan handing in the best score of the day. His card of 41 points won him the Division 3 award ahead of Dai Wood on 36.

Steve Bateman’s 38 points was victorious in the top Division while Mike Parfitt edged out Steve Mason on countback for top spot in Division 2 after both had 38 points.

In the Ladies’ event, Debbie Windmill faltered slightly towards the end of her round but still posted an excellent 38 point score. This saw off her challengers and meant her handicap was cut by two strokes as a result.

Brean Seniors maintained their good run of form in their Inter Club matches. Cannington were the latest visitors but they suffered the same fate as the others before them and returned home on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline.
