HOCKEY: Vale men suffer double reverse

5:00pm Thursday 23rd February 2012

Taunton Vale suffered two defeats in Premier Division One of the Davis Wood League and consequently remain mid-table.

On Saturday they lost 5-2 at Plymouth Marjon, goals coming from skipper Martin Johnson and Sam Young.

And on Sunday they lost 4-3 at Bath Buccaneers A after travelling with a young team.

This was a tight game with goals by Harry Ellison (2) and Johnson keeping them in the hunt.

The 2nds won 4-3 at Hereford on Saturday thanks to a hat-trick by Dan Brooks and one from Harry Ellison.

At half time Vale were 3-0 up but with only 11 players they ran out of steam in the second half to set up a tense finale.

Vale 3rds produced a superb display at home to West Dorset, winning 11-0 after leading 7-0 at half time.

Calvin Bull grabbed a hat-trick and there were further goals for Colin Jewhurst (2), Jerry Osborne, George Lang, Mark Aspden, Mike Cleverly, Harry Riste and Liam Elliott.

On Sunday a weakened team struggled against Taunton Civil Service, losing 3-2.

The 4ths drew 1-l at Okehampton. A goal by skipper Kevin Watts and a penalty flick save by Vale keeper George Clarke earned the point.

The 5ths drew 3-3 at home to Chard A with goals from Phil Brunsden, Rob Setchell and Steve Plant.

BECCA Withers struck moments from the end to give Taunton Vale Ladies the three points from a must-win game at Burnham Ladies.

Vale had created plenty of chances but Burnham were also threatening and forced player-of-the-match Baz Tregunna into several decent saves.

MEANWHILE Taunton Civil Service enjoyed double delight against local opposition in South East 1 of the Davis Wood League at the weekend.

On Saturday they won 7-1 away to Bridgwater 2nds with a hat-trick from Mark Sawyer, a brace from club stalwart John Bird and one apiece from Joe Sibley and James Coles.

On Sunday, Service took on table-topping Taunton Vale 3rds, winning 3-2.

A committed and organised display resulted in two goals from Andy Taylor and one from Mark Sawyer, Service holding out for the win despite much late pressure from the home side.
