Yeovil Town in the Noughties: Magic Moment Number 10

EXPRESS chief reporter Steve Sowden relives his tenth best Yeovil Town moment of the Noughties.

Yeovil Town's 0-0 draw with Rushden and Diamonds in the Nationwide Conference on April 21, 2001, was not the best game to have been witnessed at Huish Park by any stretch of the imagination - but it was certainly a proud moment for me.

Having been chairman of the Erection 2000 Appeal - which was set up to help fundraise for the building of a new roof above the home terrace at Huish Park - it was the culmination of a couple of years of hard work, a lot of fun and stress, and a few heated arguments along the way!

But the visit of Rushden and Diamonds for a top of the table clash in the Nationwide Conference was the perfect opportunity to officially open the newly-covered terrace.

The ground was packed with a crowd of 8,868 and I can remember walking out into the main stand of Huish Park and looking over at the home terrace - it was buzzing!

The noise coming from the packed terrace was deafening and the roof certainly helped to increase the volume.

Just by chance I went out into the main stand with club chairman John Fry and I recall saying to him, casting an eye over at the covered terrace, that all the arguments we had had during the Erection 2000 Appeal fundraising had been worthwhile!

The visit of Brian Talbot's Rushden was a huge match for Yeovil coming near the end of the 2000-01 season in which the Glovers were battling it out with the Nene Park outfit to claim the Nationwide Conference crown.

The game finished 0-0 although Tom White came agonisingly close to scoring a last-gasp winner for the Glovers.

Although Rushden went on to claim the Conference title and Yeovil had to settle for runners-up spot, that day in April 2001 and the official opening of the roof will always be a fond memory for me.
