LYDEARD overcame driving rain and blustery conditions to grab a valuable three points at home to Glastonbury on Saturday in the Premier Division of the Somerset County League.

Playing down the slope in the first half, Lydeard pressurised the visitors and opened the scoring after 25 minutes when Dale Webber cut in from the wing to cross for Luke DeSave to control and finish well from six yards.

Glastonbury responded with attractive football, despite the conditions, but the home side went in at half-time with their slender one-goal lead.

The second half followed the same pattern and it took Lydeard until the 70th minutes to score their second with a flowing move.

Defender Brendan Craggs brought the ball out of defence and found Trevor Jenkins, who moved the ball on to Matt Fowler. His cross found the ever-alert DeSave, who headed home.

Glastonbury hit back and forced a number of free-kicks in dangerous positions. And, with three minutes remaining, they reduced the arrears from a setpiece to set up a tense finish for Lydeard.

However, they survived the scare and claimed the points to move into fourth place in the table.

Man-of-the-match was midfielder Lee Palk.

On Saturday, Lydeard travel to St George’s, Easton-in-Gordano, for a league fixture.
