WITH the heavens opening around midday officials from the Silver Street Volkswagen Taunton and District Saturday Football League expected a lot of games to be called off, but in the end they only lost four to the elements.

While another at Exmoor was given a chance, but it was abandoned just before half-time as it became unplayable.

SOMERSET JUNIOR CUP ROUND TWO: Five of the Taunton League teams were postponed last week and went into their games hoping to get into the third round and congratulations to all of them as they were all successful joining Alcombe and Cannington Colts who made it through last week.

Highbridge travelled to Wells to beat Belrose 4v0 with goals from John Kear, Will Bailey, Pete Johnson and an own goal.

Locomotives appear to have had an easy day with a 7-1 home win over Stoke-sub-Hamdon thanks to a hat-trick from Matty Pounde and one each from Mark Peters, Luke Oliver, Henry Cox and also gaining an own goal.

Porlock knocked out Combe St Nicholas with a 3-0 win courtesy of goals from Harry Scatchyard, Richard Binding and veteran Gary Bennett.

At Middlezoy windy and wet, blowing down the pitch from the road end to the changing room. Middlezoy played against the wind after winning the toss - as Cartwheel emerged with their red England kit on Middlezoy were told Cartwheel Sports intended to win the Junior Cup this year.

Rovers took the lead after 25 minutes from a corner and a direct shot from Dan Luce which was well saved by the keeper but Zoy's Steve Hall was on hand to thump in the rebound.

This fired Cartwheel into action and they exerted pressure from the re-start with Zoy's Jo Warren doing well to keep out a few well struck efforts from distance wind assisted. From this a Cartwheell corner was converted with a thumping header that ripped down the back of the net - 1-1 at half-time.

Middlezoy came out knowing that they could create chances with the wind behind them - and they did - scoring three goals in 20 minutes. One being a great passing move down the right with Simon Slocombe arriving at the far post to drive in to make it 2-1.

Then after great pressure and passing from Cartwheel, Middlezoy broke to earn a corner which was converted at the far post by Andy Smith, he was not finished there adding his second and Middlezoys fourth with a volley from the edge of the box.

With 25 minutes to go Middlezoy made some changes - replacing Craig Berry the only Zoy player over 21, the move to youth seemed to finish Cartwheel off - they had a player sent off for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes left and asked for the ref to blow early as they did not see anyway back into the game.

Special mention to the ref Richard Cross who had an excellent game which could easily have boiled over without his common sense and experience.

Bridgwater Sports hit six beating Templecombe 6-1, Andy Slidmore got a pair with Adam Wall, Shane Smith, Rich Smith and Matt Fursland all getting one each.

SOMERSET INTERMEDIATE CUP ROUND TWO: The Taunton League had 13 teams in the competition at the start of the day and were bound to lose two as four of them were playing each other but the League is delighted to still have eight in the hat at the end of the day.

Civil Service didn't get to play their tie and will have a go next week at West and Middle Chinnock.

The league will have to await the FA's verdict on whether Stogursey go into the hat for the next round, they were 2-0 down, but managed to get back to 2-2 against Luso Chard with goals from Marc Troman and Ryan Dray, both teams having been reduced to ten men in a double sending-off.

With 20 minutes to go Stogursey were awarded a penalty, their opponents weren't happy with the decision and chose to walk off the pitch forcing the game to be abandoned.

White Hart Rangers have a good record in this competition and continued that with a 4-2 away win at Frome Town thanks to goals from Tim Dyke, James Osborne, Matt Buswell and and own goal.

Bridgwater Sports Reserves knocked out local rivals North Petherton 5-1, Jason Jones got a brace, Lee Blewett, Dean Organ and Benjamin Fellows all added one, while Mark Mantyk replied for Pethy.

Williton also scored four beating our own Rhode Lane Wanderers 4v2 with goals from Tom Richards, Joe Fitzsimmons and Matt Werbitzky and they too gained an own goal, Ben Patrick scored both Wanderers goals.

Bishops Lydeard were victorious beating Chilcompton Sports 3-0.

Dave Richardson, captain in the absence of Andy Clarke, won the toss and elected to play up the slope into the wind which proved to be the winning strategy.

On a day more suited to kite flying, both teams contested well and tried to play passing football with neither team managing to penetrate each others defensive lines in the first half an hour.

It was Chilcompton who had the best opportunity on the half hour mark, the Chilli centre forward leaving Jamie Tyler embarrassed on the halfway line sprinted onto a through ball, the advancing BEAR made himself big and the Chilli player passed wide.

Lydeard continued to probe and created several chances, the best falling to Terry Davis who shot wide following a decent passing move that started with the keeper Jones.

The second period saw Lydeard dominate play, Justin Dawes back after 12 months out with a knee injury he picked up in the second game of last season added width and composure to the game.

Terry Davis and Mike Cahill controlled everything in central midfield with neat quick passing and it was Cahill who was fouled out wide for the free kick that resulted in a Dan Cooke headed goal.

With the pressure on, Chilli tried to get the ball up field but Lydeard pressed the game superbly with the defensive partnership of Dan Cooke and Jamie Langford winning everything that Chilli cleared.

Both Tyler and Clapperton started to find space in the wide areas which proved costly to Chilli as they were pegged into their own half.

On 70 minutes Hellier made it 2-0, Richardson split the Chilli defence leaving Hellier to slot past a helpless keeper.

The best was still to come with Andy Middle on for Davis in the last ten squared a ball into Tyler who was instantly pressed by a Chilli player. He side stepped onto his left foot and nestled the ball from 20 yards past a fully stretched keeper into the top corner of the net to put the score 3-0.

The surprise of the day was Predators who have been in great form all season getting knocked out by Barwick and Stoford losing 2-3, Adam Kinsey and Gary Head scored their goals.

Appletree scored three goals but it wasn't enough to keep them in the competition as they let Cutters Friday hit five, Paul Lawrence, James Green and Mark Kmita scored their goals.

Alcombe Rovers Reserves must be even more peeved, they scored five goals themselves but still lost 5-6 to Merriott Rovers, Jamie Ireton scored two, Zac Brown, Patrick Reed and Dan James all netted one each.

Sydenham Rangers were knocked out by Victoria Sports losing 1v5 Tom Grimmett getting their consolation goal.

DIVISION ONE: Only one game played and that saw Cannington Colts picking up their first League win of the season and how they did so by beating Taverners 11-0.

Mark Pope was the day's leading marksman scoring a double hat-trick while the rest of the goals were shared out between, Sean Childs, Paul Meare, James Bawden, Dave Baker and and yet another own goal.

A record day for own goals this week which probably had a lot to do with the conditions forcing defenders into mistakes.

DIVISION TWO: Hulan remain rooted to the bottom of the table following their 3-1 defeat at home to Minehead, Adam Hillier scored their goal with Kenzie Farnham, Chris Carr and Declan Green winning the game for Minehead.

Wembdon went in at half-time 3-2 up against Westonzoyland with goals from Ben Cheffey, Aaron Blackburn and a 35-yarder from Simon Lukins, while Lee Goss and Callum Butt had scored for Westonzoyland.

In the second-half Wembdon tightened up defensively and were fairly solid, Oliver Jones securing the points with a goal to give them a 4-2 win.

Watchet Reserves still only have the one point following their 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Sampford Blues, Ben Saddington scoring their goal.

DIVISION THREE: Norton Fitzwarren improved their league position with a 4-2 away win at Bridgwater Sports Colts thanks to goals from James Garrad, Dave Buckingham, Stephen Garrard and Tom Blundell, while Matt Parker and Jake Chidgey responded for Sports.

Exmoor Rangers were beating Spaxton 5-0 but the conditions just got worse so the referee had no option other than to abandon the game on 40 minutes.

Middlezpoy Rovers Reserves hit six away at Old Inn Allstars to win the high scoring game 6-4 with both Scott Capel and Liam Moore scoring two each for Zoy and Mark Williams and Scott Clapp adding the other two. Steve Scorse also scored two with Rob Chidgey and Matt Markham replying for Stars.

With the Bridgwater College pitch unplayable Redgate agreed to switch their fixture to Highbridge and it paid off for them as they won the game 3-1 thanks to goals from Dam Godfrey, Sam Granville and Simon Fidoe, while Stu Carter replied for Highbridge.

DIVISION FOUR: Porlock Reserves stay top of the table despite only picking up one point away at Norton Fitzwarren Reserves in a 3-3 draw, Paul Swallow, Adam Langdon and Dan Bevens scoring their goals, and Josh Radford, Kev Smith and James Cleal all doing the same for Norton.

Ronnie Robilliard hit a brace for Pethy with Rob Marshall scoring the third.

With Porlock only drawing Bishops Lydeard Colts could have gone top but they also only managed a draw away at Westonzoyland Reserves with Sam Weston and Andy Lawton scoring for their respective teams.

Staplegrove Colts also move up the table one place after their 13-4 beating of bottom side Bridgwater Grasshoppers.

Jake Quick scored four making it seven in the week as he got a hat-trick for the Grove Under-18 side on Wednesday evening.

Kirk Reece also hit four, while both Adam Smith and Sam Mockridge scored two each and Aaron Ellicott added one.
