Yeovil Town 1, Charlton Athletic 1: Harum scarum stuff for the Glovers

YEOVIL Town keeper Alex McCarthy produced a superb display during the second-half at Huish Park on Saturday when he found the weather conditions were very much against him.

McCarthy, one of the best kickers of the ball in the Football League, struggled to cope with the strong wind that he was facing in the match which finished 1-1.

On more than one occasion his kicks upfield saw the ball come back towards him once it had got picked-up by the wind.

But he more than compensated with some fine saves to deny a decent Charlton side who were scenting their first away win since August.

Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton admitted that Charlton strikers Akpo Sodje and Deon Burton would be a handful and so they proved to be in the second period.

Sodje came on at the start of the second-half and he scored an excellent goal to level the score with a long-range shot that McCarthy could do nothing about.

And Skiverton, speaking to the BBC, said: "We knew that with big Akpo (Sodje) that he's a great handful.

"I've played against him a few times, so I know his attributes.

"To be fair, it was a great goal, and there was nothing you could do about that.

"Him and Deon Burton worked well and caused us problems.

"Their midfielders really did box us in our own half."

Skiverton added: "I think that Alex McCarthy is one of the best goalkickers in League One football.

"He's got some of the best feet in the country and he wasn't making the halfway line and neither was their keeper.

"So it was difficult and we got penned in and we had to defend.

"It was harum scarum stuff, but I think that our supporters, even with the conditions and stuff, got value for money.

"I appreciate all of the supporters that came out, and sorry about the conditions, but we fought and we gave it a go and we came out with a creditable draw against Charlton."
