YEOVIL Town Ladies captain Sarah Lawler is delighted that the Glovers have made it through to the Second Round of the FA Women's Cup following their 3-0 victory over Saltash United yesterday.
The Glovers ran out comfortable winners, but their Cornish opposition made it difficult for them throughout, with an impressive display of football.
All the goals came in the second-half with Lindsey Roe opening the scoring on 57 minutes and the prolific Jemma Tewkesbury grabbing the other two - the first on 62 minutes, and the second, a penalty, in the 76th minute.
On a weekend that saw hardly any grassroots football played in the region, Yeovil Town manager Steve Phelps managed to prepare the Tintinhull pitch to ensure this FA Cup game was fulfilled, so helping to prevent any backlog of fixtures building up due to the recent poor weather.
The Glovers were very pleased to get through to the next round and congratulated Saltash on a great performance.
Yeovil never reached their usual vigour in attack, perhaps showing signs of rustiness after so few games in recent weeks, although they did play a lot better in the second half, particularly after the first goal had been scored.
But hats off to the Cornish side who showed great resilience to hold Yeovil to 0-0 for 57 minutes, and they will certainly have a successful season if they continue to perform like they did in this game.
Captain Sarah Lawler said: "We didn't play very well on the day, but the pitch didn't suit us as it was not wide, and due to the weather it was very bobbly, so short sharp passes were going all over the place.
"But we got there in the end, but credit to Saltash, who were very well organised and didn't give up!
"If we had scored one of our chances early on I think it could have been a very different game, as the opposition became more confident the longer they held us off.
"But credit to the girls on getting past this difficult hurdle, and we are looking forward to the next round where we will play either Cullompton Rangers or Forest Green Rovers on November 29."
