Golf round-up: Blackmore claims Vale Championship crown


STEVE Blackmore finished three shots clear to win the Club Championship at Taunton Vale at the weekend.

Blackmore grossed 152 in the two-day event and had a three shot lead over second-placed Josh Martin, while former club captain Alan King was third with 157.

The new nett club champion is Lee Lewis who scored 135, three ahead of youngster James Keitch while Gary Leigh was third with 139.

The best gross score on day one was Jerry Maxwell with 74, while on the second day it was Dan Smith with 78.

The best nett score on the opening day was 68 by Pat Vearncombe with John Beer taking the honours on day two, also with 68.

Meanwhile, Keitch warmed up for the Club Championship by winning the top division of the June Running Stableford with 45 points.

Mike Bright was second with 41 and Pat Vearncombe third with 40.

Richard New won Division Two with 42 points, two better than second placed Steve Dacosta, while Alan Palmer was third with 38.

Mike Berry headed Division Three with 42 points, Mark Durman was second with 42 and Andy Jenkins third with 41.

Taunton Vale member Beryl Richards triumphed in the Somerset County Senior Ladies Golf Association strokeplay competition at Orchardleigh Golf Club last week.

Beryl won the Sams Cup for the best gross score after returning to the clubhouse at the north Somerset course with 81.

Fran Winward, also a Taunton Vale member, was the runner-up in the Bronze Division.

WARREN Knight retained his Minehead and West Somerset Club Championship after winning the 36-hole, two-day event at the weekend.

Knight followed his gross 79 with an excellent 74 to card 153 and finish three shots clear of his brother.

Bob Fossey was victorious in the Tony Ridler Trophy for best nett score, finishing with a combined total of 138, to win by just a shot.

Results: Club Championship – 1 W. Knight 79 + 74 = 153, 2 C. Knight 81 + 75 = 156, 3 K. Babb 80 + 78 = 158, 4 M. Nichols 76 + 82 = 158 (with 36 on the back 9), 5 K. Murrell 76 + 82 = 158 (with 43 on the back 9).

Tony Ridler Trophy – 1 B. Fossey 72 + 66 = 138, 2 N. Grabham 66 + 73 = 139, 3 A. Dover 74 + 68 = 142, 4 A. Whiting 69 + 73 = 142, 5 M. Nichols 68 + 74 + 142.

SIMON Heap edged victory in Saturday’s St Margaret’s Hospice Medal at Taunton and Pickeridge.

He pipped Mike Nelson on countback after both players carded nett 65s in the competition which attracted 121 players in blustery conditions.

Results: Division One – 1 Simon Heap nett 65, 2 Pat Jones 67, 3 Mike Step 68, 4 Jonathan Taubert 69, 5 Alistair Johnson 69. Division Two – 1 Mike Nelson 65, 2 Jim Allan 67, 3 Geoff Tyler 68, 4 John Gardiner 68, 5 Richy Barker 69. Division Three – 1 Jonathan Bendle 66, 2 Christopher Maggs 68, 3 Simon Hipgrave 69, 4 Adrian Howe 72, 5 Richard Palmer 74.

Catherine Bailey won the Ladies Hospice Stableford at Pickeridge last Tuesday. Catherine won the Silver Division with 37 points from Jane Ledsham with 34 and Katie Guest with 34.

In Bronze One, first place was taken by Vicky Davies with 35 points from Margaret Nation with 35 and Marion Beranek also with 35 points.

Liz Reeve won Bronze Division Two with 35 points from Caroline Grout with 34 and Maureen Hailes on 33.
