West Somerset League: Brompton extend lead


BROMPTON Ralph extended their lead in Division One of the West Somerset League to 28 points after defeating Morebath by 28 runs in Saturday’s top of the table clash.

Hosts Brompton batted first and piled up an imposing 255-7 thanks largely to the efforts of Steve Lake who finished 97 not out.

In reply, Graham Fitt picked up 4-53 as Morebath were bowled out for 227 with D. Marks hitting 54.

Roadwater remain third despite going down by 25 runs away to Bridgetown, who batted first and reached 123-8 with Miles Richards (74 not out) top scoring. Terry Matravers then picked up 4-30 as Roadwater were bowled out for 98.

Luke Milton (51) was in the runs for Carhampton, who were bowled out for 172 at home to Holford. That was to prove enough as Holford were skittled out for 94, Ed Barney taking 5-36 for Carhampton.

Paul Warne made 55 to help Crowcombe record a five-wicket victory at home to Huish Champflower, while Cannington cruised to a ten-wicket triumph away to Dulverton, who were all out for 80.

West Monkton suffered their first defeat of the season in Division Two as they went down by 35 runs away to Taunton Deane Crusaders.

Valance Similien (63) and Ryan Marsh (50) were in the runs as Deane were bowled out for 168 after deciding to bat first.

Dave Baverstock bagged 6-35 for Monkton who were dismissed for 133 with more than five overs left, Chip Chedzoy taking 5-35.

Wiveliscombe closed to gap on Monkton to 27 points after securing an eight-wicket win away to Taunton CS Radiac and Outcasts.

The home team batted first and made 167-9 with Mike Warren hitting 72. Wivey reached their target with nine overs to spare, Dennis Quick top scoring with 87.

Bishop’s Hull continued their march towards the Division Three title with a 71-run victory at home to fellow highflyers Stoke St Gregory.

Dave Hoggart made 80 and Dan Chanter 61 not out as the home team rattled up 234-7. In reply Stoke St Gregory were all out for 163.

Stogumber moved up to second thanks to a three-wicket win at home to North Newton, who batted first and were all out for 206. Nick Bennett then made 52 to help Stogumber reach victory.

N. Hill (58), P. Sparks (53) and P. Keal (52 not out) were in the runs for Timberscombe who made 227-5 away to Taunton A.

The host were then restricted to 203-9 – they had five batsmen run out – despite the efforts of Charles Hunt (50) and Melvyn Gale (43).

Division Four leaders Churchinford maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a nine-wicket win at home to Dulverton 2nds. Dan Prettyjohn bagged 5-22 as Dulverton were restricted to 130-6 and Mark Gabriel made 69 as Churchinford cruised home.
