SOMERSET’S Taunton-based British No 1 Lucy Shuker sees a dream come true tomorrow (Friday) when she lines up for the semi-finals in the inaugural Wimbledon Wheelchair Doubles Event at The Championships.
Twenty-nine-year-old Shuker, who lives in Ash Priors and trains in Taunton with her coach Natalie Ayton, partners Australia’s Daniela di Toro for the prestgious event that features just four of the world’s top wheelchair tennis doubles pairings.
Shuker and di Toro will play the second seeds, Florence Gravellier of France and Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands, in Friday’s semi-final and Shuker is confident ahead of their bid to reach Sunday's final.
“As a British tennis player you always hope you’ll play at Wimbledon one day and it’s probably going to be the highlight of my career to date,” said Shuker, who is world ranked No 8 in doubles and world No 9 in singles this week. “This week is the first time any of the women players will have played on grass — so I’m very excited about the whole thing.”
Shuker and di Toro have been training at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton this week ahead of the big event.
