Somerset Division One: Saltford 3-0 Minehead AFC

MINEHEAD AFC were on the receiving end of a difficult defeat at the weekend away from home against Saltford.

Saltford took the lead in the opening minutes when top scorer Danny Carter scored from the spot after an infringement.

The promotion chasing hosts increased their lead when Carter scored his second with a header, however with the ball striking the railing behind the goal, the referee thought it had gone wide. After remonstrations from home players, and having talked with Minehead defenders, he changed his mind and the goal correctly stood.

With the official now receiving numerous comments from a partisan home crowd, every decision was being questioned, however the respected referee who has officiated at a considerably higher level, stood his ground impressively and by the start of the second half a potentially hostile situation had calmed down.

Minehead came back into the game strongly showing good determination, and had they scored the next goal the game could have been a contest, but in the 70th minute an opportunist goal struck sweetly from the edge of the box by Benedict Bishop confirmed the points were Saltford’s.
