THERE is a sporting cliche which suggests titles are won by the side that can grind out a result in the face of adversity.
Combe St Nicholas will hope that at the end of a triumphant season, they can look back at Sunday's nail-biting last ball victory against Middlezoy as one such game.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Middlezoy amassed a decent total of 160 for the loss of only five wickets in their 40 overs. After Combe lost influential opener Roger Hunt for a duck, Raj Shaffique (25) and Daniel Glentworth (41) made steady but slow progress against a disciplined and hostile Middlezoy attack. Wickets continued to fall and at one stage Combe needed 71 runs for victory with only 11 overs and six wickets remaining.
However, Combe stalwart David Crossman (22) and recent batsman convert Andy Fooks (14) helped match winner Ricky Stoodley (37) blaze the way for an unlikely, yet hard-fought, last ball victory.
Combe would like to thank Albert Goodman for their generous financial support.
