PLAYING from the white markers at a little over 6,600 yards and with a strong prevailing wind, conditions were a severe test for golfers of all abilities at Burnham & Berrow in the Open Three-Ball Medal on June 16.
The SSS from the white tees is 72 so with the best two scores to count on each hole, a nett 144 or better would be the target. In the conditions, anything under 150 was a very good score and 13 of the 55 teams achieved this.
The winning score of 140 presented team leader Keith Lodge (Kingsdown) with something of a dilemma for the next three-ball medal at Burnham. He is a regular visitor but this time, the Anderton brothers, his usual partners, could not make it and he obviously found a couple of on-form players in Martin Purvis (4 hcp) and Stuart Walker (14).
They put together a wonderfully consistent card to finish three clear of the field. Purvis drove the green on the second hole (393 yards) and is rumoured to be giving short-hitter Tiger Woods lessons on power driving!
Leading scores: 140 K Lodge, M Purvis, S Walker (Kingsdown); 143 C Asplin, S Shuck, C Young (Droitwich); 144 R Bostock-Smith, R Collier, M Wilkins (Lanhydrock/Teignmouth/Burnham & Berrow); 145 M Farley, D Parker, S Smith (Fulford Heath) (on countback, last 6); 145 A Beaumont, S Crook, R Pritchard (Burnham & Berrow). Also on 145: B Colomé, T Edge, C Gaven (Burnham & Berrow); R Belfield, D Bell, S Townsend (Newbury & Crookham); D Homer, R Walsh, S Wallis (Burnham & Berrow/ Droitwich/Droitwich); S Baxter, E Cook, R Griffiths (Frilford Heath/ Burnham & Berrow/Burnham & Berrow).
Eight-handicapper Adrian Beaumont won the Burnham Cup at Burnham & Berrow with a nett 69, three ahead of Andy Gent.
Leading scores: Adrian Beaumont 77-8-69, Andy Gent 93-11-72, Martin Plant 85-13-72, Peter Yensen 84-12-72, John Martin 86-13-73, Neil Folland 91-8-73, David Meredith 80-7-73, John Matkin 89-16-73.
