LEADING figures from across the cricketing world have paid tribute to Marcus Trescothick after the Somerset batsman announced that he is to retire at the end of the 2019 season.
Trescothick, 43, said: "It’s been an incredible 27 years and I’ve loved every minute of it.
“However, everything has to come to an end eventually.
“This club, the members and the supporters mean so much to me. There are so many memories that I will cherish forever, and the club will always hold a truly special place in my heart."
That feeling is clearly mutual given the outpouring of affection since the news broke.
Here is a round-up of reaction to Trescothick's retirement...
He was England’s GREATEST ever opening batter - @Trescricket.

If he didn’t succumb to an unfortunate issue, he’d have broken every record for England!
Happy retirement buddy! Love ya! 🥰
An inspiration to myself and many others, it is surreal to be able to call my hero a teammate! A void that cannot be filled...so grateful for what Tres has done for me and Somerset CCC https://t.co/LSODK1Gryz

The proudest thing in my cricket career was walking out to open for @SomersetCCC and having my name called after Somerset’s greatest batsman @Trescricket we shared some great partnerships over the years and kept the running to a minimum... fair play Bang!... fair play!

If there was ever another reason to win the county champ other than it being the first time as a club, it would 100% be for this man and everything he has done for the club ❤️🙌🏻 @Trescricket @SomersetCCC #ifbangerfires https://t.co/QaEf4hMEpo

I am so lucky to be in the same dressing room. His work ethics were second to none he inspired many and I am sure players will follow his foot steps. @Trescricket thanks legend for everything @SomersetCCC https://t.co/ulAqFAEliz

Hated bowling at him cos he was so destructive, but have loved playing with him. Hopefully we can send him off in style come Sept. A living legend, still quite surreal to be playing with someone I watched and was inspired by during that 05 series. 🙌🏼 #Banger https://t.co/N9jfGuGdG3

He’s made a huge contribution to the game, has been a fine cricketer for England and Somerset and is someone who has made a huge difference to removing the stigma around mental health.
This England and Somerset legend will retire at the end of the season 😢 What an incredible career @TresCricket has had! 👏 #ThankYouTres
