Truro golfer Rhys Enoch has made the cut at the US Open.

Enoch, who is representing Wales but was born in Truro and regularly plays at Truro Golf Club, shot the second-best round of the second day of play at Pebble Beach to make the cut at two-under-par.

The Welshman was in trouble after Thursday’s first round, when his seven-over-par round of 78 saw him near the bottom of the 156-man field and in serious danger of missing the cut.

But he produced a superb second round score on Friday, with his five-under-par round of 66 bettered only by leader Gary Woodland who shot 65.

The American’s six-under-par round puts him in front at the halfway stage with nine-under over the two rounds, one shot ahead of Englishman Justin Rose.

Enoch’s round, which included an eagle and five birdies, was three shots better than defending US Open champion Brooks Koepka and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, four shots better than 2016 Olympic champion Justin Rose, and five better than 15-time major winner and three-time US Open champion Tiger Woods.

Enoch will begin his third and penultimate round at 3.47pm on Saturday afternoon.

He will tee off alongside 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed, who was also his third-round partner in last year’s Open.

The fourth and final round is on Sunday.

The tournament is being televised on Sky Sports.
