Keyes Cup final

Burnham United A 4, Lodway 2

SUPER-SUB Cain Smith came off the bench to inspire Burnham United A to an epic comeback against a strong Lodway side in the Keyes Cup final.

Burnham started brightly, keeping the ball well, but against the run of play Lodway took the lead through lively winger Andrew Law-Smith, who calmly slotted the ball between the keeper’s legs.

Shortly afterwards it was 2-0, as the ball again bobbled around the box and Law-Smith smashed home.

United knew that going down the hill in the second half would help and that the next goal was all-important, and they had keeper Dave Keirle to thank for a double save to keep them in the game.

Enter 18-year-old substitute Smith, who completely turned the game on its head after coming off the bench in the 60th minute.

Smith pulled one back with a shot that flew into the top corner and it was 2-2 when Smith burst down the right and squared the ball for Louie Jones.

His shot was blocked, and captain Steve Osgood came steaming in to hammer the ball into the roof of the net.

On 75 minutes Jones chased down a lost cause and the keeper’s clearance landed to Smith, who expertly lobbed the ball into the net with his left foot from 35 yards, sending the Burnham fans into raptures.

Lodway pushed to get back on level terms but Smith tapped the ball in for his hat-trick following good work from Dax Vincent.

The Burnham comeback was complete, their fantastic second-half display earning silverware.

Man of the match Smith delivered a truly magnificent individual performance that will take a while to forget for anyone who witnessed it.
