Wellington 5, Hengrove Athletic 0

Wellington AFC celebrated the news that Clive Jones would remain as manager for another season with an emphatic win on Saturday.

The victory, against a side likely to be relegated from the Premier Division (they are 10 points adrift of safety), ended a run of four defeats for the Tangerines.

They went ahead from the penalty spot, after Hengrove goalkeeper Aaron Greatbanks brought down Jack Bryant in the sixth minute, and Josh Wadham converted the kick.

Soon it was 2-0, as impressive youngster Joe Wylie set up Jack Bryant to cross for brother Conor to smash in.

Conor Bryant scored his second and the hosts’ third before half-time, latching onto Glen Wright’s header and chipping the keeper.

Sam Jones’ shot from the edge of the box and Lewis Pock’s well-placed effort – his first for the senior side – wrapped up a handsome win.

Wellington, now 15th in the Premier table, play their final home game of the season this Saturday, against 11th-placed Bridport (ko 3pm).

Bishops Lydeard 2, Welton Rovers 0

TWO second-half goals secured three valuable points for Bishops Lydeard against top-half opponents Welton Rovers, at Cothelstone Road on Saturday.

The first half was a dull affair, with too many poor passes and few chances created by either side.

The best chance for Lydeard was a long-range shot from Ryan Brereton which went just over the bar.

In the 38th minute, Welton’s Joe Battrick came close to scoring, but his header missed the target.

The home team gradually got on top in the second period, and they took the lead in the 67th minute with a goal of real quality.

Luke Wandless broke down the left and put in a superb cross which Jake Quick headed home.

The lead was extended minutes later, when Zac Ryder ran down the centre and passed to Brereton, who rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home to effectively kill off the contest.

Welton could not mount a comeback and Lydeard held on to secure the points, which put more distance between themselves and the First Division relegation zone.

Lydeard lie in 14th place and now have 38 points, meaning they are eight points ahead of third-bottom Chippenham Park and second-bottom Oldland Abbotonians.

They entertain 12th-placed Sherborne Town on Saturday (ko 3pm), for their penultimate home game of the season.
