MANCHESTER United stars Frank Stapleton and Russell Beardsmore paid tribute to Taunton Town after a successful legends match at the Viridor Stadium on Sunday.

The pair joined the likes of Sammy McIlroy, Lee Martin and Arthur Albiston in the United side for the fixture, which ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw.

Stapleton, a striker in his illustrious playing career which included spells at United, Arsenal and Ajax among others, lined up at the heart of the defence and enjoyed the occasion.

“I’ve been playing these sort of matches more or less since I retired to try and keep active," Stapleton said.

“One or two lads are a little bit out of shape and it can be difficult but I still enjoy it. I play five-a-side on a regular basis and you have to keep exercising.

“It’s a real old-school ground. In our day, supporters were that close to the action. Most of the grounds we play on are like this."

Stapleton was also more than happy to take time out after the match to have photographs and sign autographs for the Manchester United supporters in attendance.

“You’ve got to do it for people," he said.

"I’m not sure they get that feedback so much from modern players due to security, so it’s nice for us.”

Russell Beardsmore, who played for United between 1986 and 1993, is currently in charge of assembling the legends squads.

“Everyone has been so welcoming – the Royal Ashton hotel have been fantastic," Beardsmore said.

“Thanks to the club, especially Kev [Kevin Sturmey] who has done masses of organising.

"Everyone has gone home happy after a 3-3 draw.

“We have a nucleus of about 18 players but not everyone can always play.

“All the lads are approachable – they’ll sign things – and that’s just part of what we do. It’s second nature, which is great.”
