WEMBDON Football Club has been chosen to host one of the Somerset FA's new 'Wildcat Centres' for young female footballers.

A total of 18 new SSE Wildcat Centres will join the existing 11 centres in the county, with the objective being to provide a fun football environment for girls aged between five and 11 years old.

Wembdon Under-11 girls manager Steve Hellard said: "We are very excited about being chosen by the FA to host a SSE Wildcat Centre at our wonderful new facilities at the Green at Wembdon.

"SSE Wildcats offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment, created exclusively for girls on a weekly basis and provides a safe environment where girls can try football for the first time.

"The initiative aims to inspire participants to engage with football, meet new friends, develop fundamental skills, learn new things and create the foundation for a lifelong love of football.

"Girls football is a fast-growing sport and Wembdon FC has this year seen its thriving Under-11 girls team double in size, helped no doubt by the progress of the England Lionesses as one of the world's best teams in women's football.

"Wembdon has a number of teams of all ages, right through to adults, and the club can therefore provide a pathway for any participants in the Wildcats initiative who thereafter wish to join a club and continue to play."

The Wildcats project will utilise FA-qualified coaches, and sessions will be held on Thursday evenings, starting on April 25.

There are a maximum of 30 places available, and the cost will be £3 per child per one-hour session.
