Regional Division 3

Bridgwater Jupiter 35, Sydenham Gems 50

JUPITER, knowing that relegation was inevitable, went into the local derby seeking final season points and a much-needed derby victory.

The match started well with every player driving for the ball and being able to covert the goals.

Towards the end of the quarter, Gems took control of the game but the second quarter saw the long-awaited introduction of Paige Davey to GS following her long spell of absence as a result of ACL surgery.

Her introduction led to increased confidence in the team.

However, Gems led 23-15 at half-time but Jupiter came out determined to reduce the deficit.

Tireless work around the defensive circle from Emily Bridges WD boosted Jupiter but an injury to captain Imma Matcham meant further changes.

In the final quarter, Sammie Griffin C showed why she was a worthy player of the match, with determination with speed through the court and accurate passing into the shooters.

Unfortunately, it was not enough with Gems holding out victorious.

Saturn 46, Newton 64

SATURN started the game strongly with some timely moves and confident shooting by Maddie Kennard (GS).

However, the first quarter ended closely 14-16 to Newton.

During the second quarter, Sally Haysham (WD/GD) put pressure on attacking feeds into Newton’s accurate shooters but it was still an end-to-end game and the second quarter ended with Saturn still trailing 26-31.

Saturn came back fighting but it was not quite enough as Newton grew stronger through the second half.

Player of the match: Maddie Kennard; opposition player: Lisa Lukins.

Neptune 37, Hendford 54

NEPTUNE faced up to a very strong Hendford team, who took an early 18-9 lead.

Chris Durant (C) and Rebecca Dunn (WA) made strong passes to enable some amazing shots from Hazel Hucker (GA) and Katie Harris (GS) as Neptune won the quarter by two goals.

Cerys Etheridge took the court to play goal attack, she made some brilliant dodges and had some good shots.

In the final quarter, the defence really upped their game. Katie Anthony (WD) made some lovely interceptions, backed up by Sally Haysham (GD) and player of the match Amy Miller (GK).

It was a great team effort from start to finish.

Somerset League Division 3

Luna 26, Summerhouse 37

LUNA started what was to be a fast, physical match with a close first quarter with just one goal in it thanks to accurate shooting from Sharon Etheridge GS and Michaela Hoppins GA.

The second quarter saw excellent movement from Sarah Keane WA and Gail Cornish C, to move the ball to the scoring D.

The third quarter saw Summerhouse make a change to their shooting team and, despite hard work from the Luna defence Bex Dunn GD and Gemma Malone GK, Summerhouse pulled ahead by eight goals.

Unfortunately fresh legs in the form of Alison Sanders WA and Kate Atyeo WD Luna could not close the gap.

Player of the match: Michaela Hoppins; opposition player: Gemma Malone.

Gems 50, Jupiter 35

SYDENHAM Gems took to the court against Bridgwater rivals Jupiter and secured a small lead from the outset.

With strong attacking drives by Beth Fella and Hannah Clapp, Gems were able to maintain their goalscoring, which was supported with accurate feeding by Helen Martin and Mikki Hole.

Jupiter continued to apply pressure but well timed interceptions from Kerry Fellows, Rheanne Lee and Amy Burley kept Gems in control.

Changes were made, with Carly Martin fitting in well, as Gems claimed the win.

Monmouth 42, Sapphires 33

SAPPHIRES were unfortunate to lose against Taunton-based Monmouth.

Despite the high levels of pressure from Sue (GK), Carly (GD) and Lilly Paul (WD), the opposition crept into a 10-9 first quarter lead.

Great patience and communication in the attacking third from Mikki Hole (C) and Katie Hill (WA), bringing the ball to shooters Laura Coombes (GA) and Tanisha Birch (GS), allowed Sapphires to stay in touch but Monmouth pulled clear.

Priory 66, Emeralds 19

EMERALDS started slowly and only scored three goals in the first quarter.

There were some brilliant interceptions from Charlie Webb, Angel Finka and Amelia Williams in the second quarter.

But despite these, and some great attacking skills, the Taunton team were comfortable winners.
