King Alfred boxers make a good start to the season

5:21pm Tuesday 9th October 2007

THE season has started well for the local King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club.

Just one week after their presentation night, three of the boys boxed on a dinner-show at Melksham in front of former World, European and British welterweight champion John H Stracey, who was the special guest.

First to shine was Aidan (The Golden Boy) Stokes, who took it ho his opponent in round with a nice bubble jab, pushing R Walklett (Walcot), back onto the ropes.

Both lads had a share of round two, but in the third, Stokes upped the pace, hitting Walklett with a lovely combo and The Golden Boy was rewarded with a unanimous points win.

Second up for King Alfred at Melksham was Mason (The Magnificent) Shaw, who boxed a good fight against T McDonagh (Walcot). Both boxers gave their all, with Mason losing the first two rounds and coming back strongly in the third. It was not enough to get the decision.

Last in the ring for the local club was "Tricky" Ricky Cross, against Empire lad D Sarkell. It was a war from the first bell, with both boxers hitting hard. It was a very good and entertaining boxing match, with Ricky getting the majority points win.

n If you are interested in training with the club - subs are cheap - or if you would like to get fit, male or female, any age, all are welcome. The King Alfred club is based at Springfield Road, down the new ASDA road at Terry Rickard's yard (Skiphire).
