IT was a big day at Cricket St Thomas Golf club on Saturday as a large crowd of members and families gathered to welcome the 2019 captain's drive-in, with Steve Barry beginning his reign as club captain.
The day started with a Shotgun competition in which 72 players participated over 15 holes.
Four young players set a stunning target of 43.57 as Aaron Crabb (scratch), Alex Murphy (4) Matthew Crabb and Will Bennett (2) birdied 12 holes.
On Monday, 42 Seniors played a three ball, all to count stableford competition in cold conditions.
The scoring was lower than in recent outings, but John Twose managed to steer his team to victory, five points ahead of
his nearest rivals.
Result; 1, John Twose; Ron Sutherland & George Willerton - 107 points; 2. George Wallace; Jerry Blackburn & Ian Griffiths - 102 points; 3. Dick Hall; Barrie Heath & Geoff Dean - 100 points
Only 20 members of the senior section attended a rain sodden fourball medalford competition on Wednesday.
Impeded by the relentless rain for the first nine holes, a score of 23 recorded by John Wandless’s team was enough to win the day.
This was mainly due to a fine medal round of 11-under par, 59 recorded by John Wandless and John Pearce.
Result; 1. John Wandless & John Pearce (59) – Mike Hone & Paul England (36 points) = 23; 2. James Siabi & Barrie Heath (61) - John Sweet & Dave Mugridge (34 points) = 27; 3. Bob White & Peter Spencer-Farr (65) – Chris Gingell & Mike Aldridge (36 points) = 29
The Seniors completed their week on Friday with a 15-hole Bowmaker competition.
The players struggled against the rain squalls, but an exciting finish saw only a single point separating the first three with John Sweet’s team claiming victory with a better back nine.
Result; 1. John Sweet; Mark Sanders & P. Pross - 56 points; 2. Richard Ager; Dave Mugridge & James Siabi - 56 points; 3. Andy Beale; Clive Fisk & Jerry Stephens - 55 points
