TAUNTON Town picked up another valuable three points on Saturday, defeating Gosport Borough 3-2.

Town went behind in the second minute but Lewis Hall equalised before Ryan Brett's superb free-kick sent Taunton into half-time 2-1 up.

Ollie Chamberlain's spectacular acrobatic volley made it 3-1, and Ryan Pennery's stoppage time penalty was too little, too late for Gosport.

Here's how Town's players rated...

Chandler Hallett – 6

The goalkeeper grew into this match, the final one of his loan spell from Colchester United, before being replaced by Lloyd Irish at half-time after tweaking his groin.

He will be disappointed to have been beaten early on by Lanahan’s looping header and was hesitant when Pennery lobbed him shortly afterwards, only to be saved by Emmerson's goalline clearance.

The youngster from Cheddon Fitzpaine more than redeemed himself with fine saves from Patrick Suarci and Charlie Davis later in the first half and can reflect fondly on a loan spell which has benefited him and the club.

Pierce Mitchell – 6

The wing-back gave away a couple of soft early free-kicks, one of which led to Gosport’s opener, but put in a solid shift thereafter.

Lewis Hall – 7

The left-back took his goal expertly and was assured in possession. Kept his opposite number largely quiet on the wing.

Ben Adelsbury – 7

The best of Taunton’s back three on the day, Adelsbury won everything in the air and was the most composed of the defence with the ball at his feet.

Conceded the late penalty but the decision looked harsh on the former Salisbury man.

Ed Palmer – 5

The centre-back will have better days – he was uncharacteristically sloppy in possession and made a couple of unpunished errors at the back, including a sliced clearance which nearly led to a Gosport equaliser early in the second half.

Improved towards the closing stages as Taunton held firm but blotted his copybook with a yellow card.

Keith Emmerson – 6

Emmerson came to Taunton’s rescue in the early stages, clearing Pennery’s lob off the line in the fifth minute to prevent his side going 2-0 down.

Did nothing wrong at the back, save for one aerial miscommunication with Palmer that almost let Gosport in, but could perhaps have used the ball better – he went long too often given the absence of Matt Wright up front.

Matt Buse – 6

A fairly quiet afternoon for Buse, who worked hard and carried out his defensive duties diligently but had little chance to shine on the ball.

Ollie Chamberlain – 7

The midfielder drove Taunton forward after they went behind early, getting the crowd going with a rasping 25-yarder which flew just wide.

He took aim again in the second half and succeeded on this occasion with a brilliant acrobatic volley to establish a two-goal cushion for his side.

Another all-action display from the local lad in the engine room.

Ryan Brett – 8

The captain for the day produced a performance worthy of the armband.

Strong in the tackle, useful in possession and, most importantly, that superb free-kick which put Taunton in front on the stroke of half-time.

You’ll go a long way to see a better goal from a set piece this weekend.

Dan Sullivan – 6

A typically busy display from Sullivan, who hassled and harried the Gosport defence and holding midfielders and set up Hall's equaliser with a neat flick on.

Andrew Neal – 6

Town’s top scorer was largely feeding off scraps in the first half but put his one meaningful effort on target, forcing O’Flaherty into a fine save.

He had a presentable opening late on but fired wide, though he continued to pressurise the centre-halves and work the channels as effectively as he does every week.

Substitutes

Lloyd Irish (for Hallett, 45) – 6

A relatively quiet return from Australia for Irish, who had little to do and couldn't have done anything with Hannery's penalty.

One hairy moment when he couldn't quite claim a bouncing ball after Palmer's aforementioned sliced clearance, but Town got away with it and will be delighted to have their goalkeeper back in action.

Shane White (for Mitchell, 76) - 6

A welcome return to action for the reliable defender after his fractured cheekbone - he is set to play in a mask at Wimborne Town next weekend.

Did everything he had to do down the right.

Matt Wright (for Sullivan, 85) - N/A

Not on long enough to make a real impact, but the skipper made a nuisance of himself in the closing stages.
