NEW Year, new you?

Each January sees gym memberships spike, and joggers head out into the winter cold.

But how about trying one of these more unusual sports in 2019?

There is a dedicated American football club for this part of the world, the Somerset Wyverns.

'Rugby with pads' or a 'violent game of chess'... there's no game like it.

Everyone on the team is taking part in their own battle on the field, as each side looks to outmanoeuvre the other for 60 minutes... or a little longer.

The Wyverns have adult and youth teams, allowing anyone aged 13+ to train with them.

Practice is at Victoria Park in Taunton (10am-noon for juniors and 11.45am-3pm for adults), unless otherwise announced on the club Facebook page (facebook.com/wyvernsafc).

The Facebook page is the best route for potential new recruits to contact the club members, who can also be reached via info@somersetwyvernsafc.com with any questions.

All rookies are expected to bring football/rugby boots, water and a gumshield if they possess one.

If less physical contact and more pinpoint accuracy is what you fancy, then shooting at Burnham-on-Sea Rifle Club may be the choice for you.

The club meets at Cassis Close on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (6.30-9pm) and the occasional Saturdays and Sundays (10am-2pm).

Mondays are for club members only, with the other days for mixed groups (22lr 25m and air rifle).

All are welcome (from age 13, if they are with an adult and can hold a rifle), with newbies being trained by the full club members and the club's ethos being to enjoy the sport.

For more information, visit www.burnhamrifleclub.org.uk; new members need to bring completed forms (see website) and ear defenders, with all other equipment provided.

Alternatively, you might want to take the plunge and start swimming with Burnham-on-Sea Swimming Club.

The club meets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays (club swimming) and Tuesdays and Thursdays (learn to swim), allowing people to swim for fitness and train for competition.

Obviously swimming is a lifelong skill that can save lives and keep people healthy, and joining a club can add extra motivation to achieve your goals within a family atmosphere.

Details can be found on the website (burnhamonseaswimmingclub.co.uk) or Facebook page (facebook.com/BurnhamOnSeaSwimmingClub).
