FA Women’s Super League 1
Birmingham City Women 2, Yeovil Town Ladies 1

TAUNTON footballer Emily Syme scored her first WSL goal on Sunday, as Yeovil Town Ladies came agonisingly close to gaining a point away to third-placed Birmingham City.

Midfielder Syme retained her place in the starting line-up from the defeat to Manchester City, as the Lady Glovers reached half time with the game goalless.

Lucy Staniforth had already been denied by a fine Megan Walsh save, but she gave the hosts the lead in the 50th minute after finding herself one-on-one with Walsh.

It was 2-0 on 77 minutes, as Charlie Wellings produced a fine finish, but Yeovil kept battling and almost pulled off an unlikely comeback.

Three minutes into added time, some sloppy play from Birmingham presented England Under-19 prospect Syme with an opportunity, and she made no mistake.

There was still time for Hannah Short to deliver a free-kick which caused chaos in the home box, both Nicola Cousins and then Syme having efforts cleared off the line, but the hosts clung on.

The result means Yeovil stay bottom on three points – one behind Brighton & Hove Albion and two off Everton.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) the Lady Glovers visit Chelsea, and this Sunday they host West Ham United at Dorchester Town FC (ko 3pm).

EMILY Syme’s old side, Bishops Lydeard Ladies, were due to face Keynsham Town Development in a top-of-the-table clash in the Premier Division of the South West Women’s League.

But hosts Keynsham called the game off due to a waterlogged pitch.

This Sunday, Lydeard welcome Downend Flyers to Cothelstone Road (ko 2pm).

In the Somerset County Women’s League, both Ash Rangers Ladies and Bishops Lydeard Reserves picked up handsome wins.

Harriet Kelly scored a hat-trick for Ash, with Hannah Forse, Kelly Saffin and Amy Lang adding one apiece, to see off Burnham United 6-2.

Lydeard Reserves eased past Pen Mill Reserves 3-0, thanks to Sarah Lindsay (2) and Amy Blowers.
