SIMON Baunton won the delayed staging of the Charles Cooke March Hare Stableford last Saturday.

The poor early year weather postponed the original early March date but Baunton made the most of the dry but breezy November morning to secure victory.

He carded 41 points to win by one from two players who ended on 40.

Mel Brown matched Steve Eley’s early 40 point return but then edged him out on a countback over the back nine.

Another countback was needed for fourth spot in a battle of the 5-handicappers which was won by Dan Broom on 39 points ahead of Matt Shaw.

The two standout scores of a wet November Stableford both came in Division 2.

Pete Dunn had the best of the day, 43 points, as he collected the Sam Smalldon Memorial Trophy for that feat.

He beat John Rabbetts into second spot by a single point.

Rabbetts can consider himself unlucky, as he would have been celebrating victory in either of the other two divisions with 42 points.

Matt Shaw completed a good weekend’s golf as he won Division 1 with 39 points to edge himself back closer to a 4 handicap. Adam Cox was the runner-up on 37.

Roger Phillips was the victor in the third flight with 36 points, one clear of Trevor Searle.

Seniors captain-elect Vincent Ford was the only player to match par in the November Medal.

With his round of 69 he won Division 2 by three from John Hale, and was six clear of third-placed Bob Hurrell.

Scoring was much closer in the top flight, although no-one matched their handicap.

A countback was required to decide the winner for two players who shot one-over nett 70s.

Geoff Hill carded a better back nine than John Procter though to give the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Tony Higgins was third on 72.

Millie Jones produced the winning round of the Ladies October Medal on the alternate day last Sunday in some very testing conditions.

The up-and-coming youngster shot a nett 65 which eventually saw her victorious by a massive 10-stroke margin over Carole Short.

Jones also enjoyed a two-stroke reduction on her handicap as reward for her excellent play.

Lyn Bird was the third placed finisher on 76.
