Evo-Stik Southern League
Premier Division South
Weymouth 2, Taunton Town 1

A LAST-GASP goal ended Taunton Town's unbeaten league run at 35, and gave Weymouth all three points from a close contest on Tuesday night.

Matt Wright gave the Peacocks a fourth-minute lead at the Bob Lucas Stadium, only for Brandon Goodship to equalise and Abdulai Baggie to grab the winner in stoppage time.

The visitors were unchanged from Saturday's win over Staines Town, meaning that both Matt Buse and Ollie Chamberlain retained their spots in midfield.

Favourites Weymouth may have been, but it was the Peacocks who started like they meant business - Andrew Neal getting through in just the second minute, touching it past Jordan Seabright but then falling over at the decisive moment.

Yet Taunton only had to wait a couple more minutes to take the lead as Neal - having just had a header blocked by Seabright - sent the ball across for Wright to nod in.

The Terras weren't at the races for the first 10 minutes, but gradually they gained a foothold in the game and began to dominate possession, with the away side looking to hit them on the break.

Lloyd Irish was not being overworked, although he was grateful for some superb blocks from the men in front of him, as Weymouth began to pose more of a goal threat.

A good chance came the way of Wright on the half hour, as Shane White's crossfield ball picked him out, but the header across goal was just in front of Neal and whistled past the post.

Baggie was starting to look a real menace on the right wing for the hosts, and he was denied just before the break by Irish's sprawling save one-on-one.

That meant the visitors kept their 1-0 lead into the break, but they suffered a blow as Keith Emmerson - so solid at centre-back - was forced off injured.

If the tide was starting to turn in the first period, Weymouth were well on top after the interval.

With Baggie a constant menace and the hosts getting their passing game going, the Peacocks had their backs to the wall.

So it was no surprise when the equaliser came on 59 minutes, and no surprise who scored it - Goodship, the leading marksman in last season's Premier Division, picking the ball up on the edge of the box and beating Irish with a fierce shot.

Taunton were seriously up against it now, but looked to have ridden out the storm without falling behind - Irish shovelling a close-range Ben Thomson effort away one-handed.

The hosts then broke from a Peacocks corner, with only Pierce Mitchell back, but Baggie selfishly shot instead of squaring the ball, and Mitchell deflected it behind.

Wright headed in from a corner, but the goal was disallowed for an apparent push, leaving just enough injury time for the home side to nick a winner.

Their two most dangerous players combined for it, Baggie playing a one-two with Goodship to get goal-side of Nuno Felix, and slot the ball across Irish and in.

It was no less than the Terras deserved after dominating the second half, but still it was a painful way for the Taunton unbeaten run to end.

Yet the Peacocks can take great encouragement from the way they went toe-to-toe with the team generally considered the strongest in the league.

And they have the chance to bounce back on Saturday, away to Hertfordshire side Kings Langley (ko 3pm).
