BRIDGWATER Town were left kicking their heels during what should have been their opening match of the new season on Saturday as a lack of rain made Hengrove Athletic's pitch unplayable.

A Hengrove statement said: "After ten weeks with very little rain, and despite having watered the pitch extensively overnight for several weeks, the inspecting referee had no option to call the game off due to player safety.

"Several large cracks have appeared in recent days similar to the one pictured and all around the pitch, there are many other smaller ones that can best be described as dangerous.

"We would like to thank Bridgwater Town for their patience and understanding during this morning's events and look forward to rearranging this game shortly."

Bridgwater will now begin their season on Tuesday night at home to Buckland Athletic (7.45pm).
