Western Counties West
Chard 24, Sidmouth 22

A DRAMATIC late try from skipper Ryan Helliar and Charlie Roberts’ conversion gave Chard a much-needed win on Saturday after a dismal run of results, writes Glyn Hughes.

The game was in real doubt with the pitch waterlogged on Friday, but hours of work by Don Pavey and Ian Fielder on Saturday morning improved things sufficiently for it to take place.

Chard had to make two late changes, as veteran Brian Sugar and youngster Archie Broomfield (making his debut) were promoted from the 2nd XV.

Generally speaking the Chard forwards had the better of things throughout, but the opposite was probably true in the backs, so it was a well-contested game.

The hosts scored typical forwards tries through Luke Hill and Scott Johnson, and the referee also awarded Chard a penalty try when Sidmouth were penalised for too many infringements on their try-line.

With little time left, the home side held a narrow 17-15 lead, but were then guilty of some poor defensive play and conceded a converted try.

It looked as if Chard had blown it, but they won the ball back immediately and Helliar went over, with Roberts – returning to the team after a long absence due to injury – keeping his cool to kick the extra two points.

This bonus-point win was vital for Chard in their bid to move clear of the relegation zone, especially as Crediton shocked high-flying St Austell.

Chard are only six points above the dropzone, but this morale-boosting victory should give the players the confidence to pick up more points and secure survival.

They are at home again this Saturday (ko 2.30pm), as they host league leaders St Ives.

Somerset 2 South
Chard 2nds 7, Somerton 31

CHARD 2nd XV fielded a mixture of youngsters and veterans, with Gavin Watts skipper for the day.

They defended well, but Somerton led 12-0 at half time.

At the beginning of the second half Chard lost the influential Billy Brookes to the sin bin, and Somerton pulled further ahead.

Upon his return, home captain Watts scored a fine try which was converted by Ieuan Watkins.

Somerton brought on some fresh legs and sealed a 31-7 win.

On Saturday Chard 2nds are away to Weston-super-Mare 4ths (ko 2.30pm).

Chard 3rds were due to host Taunton 3rds on Friday night but the pitch was unplayable.

This Saturday Chard 3rds entertain Frome 3rds (ko 2.15pm at Crewkerne Road).
