Staplegrove 0, Middlezoy Rovers 3

AFTER a week’s break, Middlezoy Rovers returned to action on Saturday at local rivals Staplegrove.

With the teams at opposite ends of the table, you could have been forgiven for predicting the outcome of this game before it had begun.

Zoy started brightly and 10 minutes in they had the lead, as a long goal-kick from Greg Turner was brought down beautifully by Dan Luce in midfield, allowing him to turn and slide it through for Jed Williams, who made no mistake with his finish.

The visitors looked like they could score at will but their finishing was letting them down, as they worked some good opportunities from wide positions, with Williams and debutant Adam Long both going close.

It remained 1-0 at the break and the second half was much the same as the first, with Zoy creating chances but failing to convert, while the hosts offered very little as an attacking threat.

Williams and Callum Laird were getting in dangerous positions out wide as chances fell to Luce, Andy Smith and Aaron Whaites, but a mixture of poor finishing and last-ditch defending frustrated the away side.

The second goal finally came on the hour, when Charlie Lintell’s persistence created an opening for Laird, whose effort came back off the post and fell for Long, who tapped into the empty net to cap an impressive debut.

Unfortunately, in getting his goal Long picked up an injury, and so gave way to fellow debutant Alex Male.

For the rest of the half it was all Zoy, who should have won by many more goals but had to settled for just one more.

The dangerous Williams broke down the left and cut the ball back to Luce, and he unselfishly squared the ball to Laird in space, leaving him the simple task of slotting into the open net for a 3-0 victory.

The team have a fixture on Wednesday night at home to seventh-placed Clevedon United, but are without a game at the weekend.

South West Women’s Premier
Middlezoy Ladies 1, Torquay United Ladies 1

MIDDLEZOY welcomed the in-form leaders to The Aerodrome on Sunday afternoon and produced a brilliant performance to take a share of the points.

The ladies played with added grit and determination and chased every ball down, resulting in Torquay resorting to using the long ball over the top, which Holly Cox and Abi Payne dealt with quite easily.

The second half was like the first, with Middlezoy battling hard, and they took the lead when Anusia Rourke outpaced the Torquay defence and shot low and hard under the keeper.

Torquay then started to put pressure on and were rewarded when a right wing cross was headed home in the 85th minute.

Middlezoy were unable to find a winner and so the match finished in an entertaining draw.

Next week, Middlezoy travel to Plymouth to take on Marine Academy, who are yet to drop a point.
