The ten members of Penryn Ladies squad who were selected by Cornwall on Sunday put in a great shift, writes Jessica Howell.

The team line-up saw five representatives from Penryn in the starting line-up in their training match against South-West Two South league leaders Newton Abbot – Steph Trapp, Jess Humber, Imogen Miller, Clare Matthews and Claire Thompson, with the remaining five - Zeta Penrose, Oriel Brazier, Ro Gomez, Martha Simons and Jessica Howell all on the bench – but the Penryn five all came on to make a big impact!

On the day, the Devon side maintained their outstanding form at the present time with a 37-7 victory.

However, it is worth pointing out that just two weeks ago, a seriously weakened Penryn Ladies side travelled to face the same All Whites side, and suffered a 32-7 loss, with two Borough tries disallowed and injuries further reducing the Penryn side to just twelve players!

Penryn's Cornwall stars will be in action on Sunday when they face St Austell in South-West Two South at the Memorial Ground.

Cornwall U20s opened their 2018 U20 County Championship campaign overcame a very good Gloucestershire team at a chilly Cinderford RFC, writes Chris Lea.

Penryn's Kyle Gratrix got Cornwall underway with an early driven maul, only for Gloucestershire to get back on terms. The home team added a penalty on 20 minutes to make the score 8-5 in their favour before Cornwall scrum half Noah Nash exploited a gap and nipped over to regain the lead for Edwards to add the extras. On half time Tian Clarke scored a well worked try for Edwards to take a 19-8 lead.

The second half was a very well contested game. A tribute to U20 rugby and in particular the Cornish defence. Relentless attacking play led to a Gloucestershire winger adding a try to reduce Cornwall's lead to 19-15.

Penryn's Ethan Tyler then came off the bench and showed great confidence. The enthusiastic crowd had to wait until the 75th minute for Cornwall to seal the game following good control in the Gloucestershire '22', Kyle Gratrix went over again for the all important score to set up a final 24-15 scoreline.

With the final whistle the Cornwall boys could celebrate a well deserved victory knowing that there is still work to be done before they take on Hampshire at St Austell RFC on Sunday, February 25.
