Somerset County League Premier Division
Fry club 1, Middlezoy Rovers 0

MIDDLEZOY had the long trip to Fry club on Saturday as they looked to build on recent impressive results against a team who were also in a fine run of form.

In very windy conditions, it was the side playing with the wind in their favour who had the majority of the possession in each half.

Middlezoy had the task of defending first against the wind as they looked to hold out the half, hitting on the counter and have the advantage of the wind in the second half.

The first real chance of the half fell to Zoy when a counter attack led to a corner, from which Craig Wright's brilliant delivery was headed over by Dan Luce from six yards out.

Another counter attack brought Zoy the next chance, as Wright's header at the back post from Steve Hall's cross ooked as though it may have crossed the line, but all protests were silenced as the linesman had his flag up for offside.

Fry's were looking dangerous with their wing play and moved the ball around well considering the conditions.

After Zoy had had the better first half chances, it was Fry's who got the break through as a corner was only cleared to the edge of the box where the winger placed the ball perfectly into the bottom corner to give Greg Turner in goal no chance.

Middlezoy had a chance to equalise moments later when Jed Williams beat his man and cut in from the left, but his shot was well saved and the ball rebounded out for a corner off a defender.

Fry's could have furthered their lead moments later as Zoy had Turner to thank when he pulled of a save at his front post to ensure Zoy only went into half-time 1-0 down.

In the second half it was Zoy's turn to enjoy the majority of the possession as, with the wind behind them, they pushed for an equaliser.

As Zoy had done in the first half, however, Fry's sat deep and looked to counter attack and this created the first chance of the second half, which Turner did brilliantly to tip over the bar.

The visitors had various chances with both Wright and Callum Laird hitting over from close range but they could not find the goal that their second half pressure deserved.

With time ticking away and Zoy pushing more men forward, Fry's had the next chance when they hit on the counter but Turner was again in form, saving a one-on-one effort.

Zoy spurned a glorious chance to equalise at the death when Paul Stimpson's shot was spilled out to Craig Wright two yards out, but the frontman somehow managed to slam the ball against the post and out for a goal kick to sum up Zoy's day in front of goal.

A draw would probably have been a fair result on the balance of play, but it wasn’t to be as Fry's held on for a 1-0 win.
