Chilcompton Sports 3, Bridgwater Town Reserves 4

BRIDGWATER Town Reserves made the daunting trip to Chilcompton on Saturday to face a side with one defeat all season, 14 wins in a row and only two goals conceded in their last 10 games.

Yet the visitors stunned the league leaders, winning 4-3 with goals from Alex Male (2), George Sinnott and Ash Tandy.

Bridgwater took the lead as early as the third minute following a superb counter-attack, as Matt Connick found Tandy, who outpaced the recovering defenders and crossed for Male at the back post to score for the fourth consecutive game.

Both teams continued to threaten, and Chilcompton equalised through a spot-kick from their prolific captain Ryan Gay after Paul Goss was adjudged to have brought him down.

The next 10 minutes were very even, but the hosts then went ahead as a neat move ended with Gay tapping in on the rebound after Goss’ save on 27 minutes.

The away side’s response was rapid, as just two minutes later Sinnott beat his man to drill in a cross and Male guided the ball home.

And Town had the lead for the second time in the match on 34 minutes, as Tandy picked out Sinnott on the left who, at a near impossible angle, leathered the ball in off the crossbar and post.

Bridgwater led 3-2 at half-time, and it was the home side who dominated after the break.

But, following some resolute defending, the visitors broke with pace on 64 minutes and Sinnott crossed for Tandy to head home.

Chilcompton then began to lose their discipline, but Town kept their heads as Goss made a superb save from a long-distance effort.

Gay completed his hat-trick in the dying moments, but it was Bridgwater who claimed the spoils.

Manager Dan Wright said: “The lads were immense in all areas.

“We scored some fantastic goals and wasted no chances but, at the same time, defended as a team throughout.

“The win is testimony to the discipline and work ethic to execute our gameplan against the top sides.

“But today’s win means nothing if we fail to take this form into the next few games away to Wrington Redhill [November 25], home to Staplegrove [December 6], our Premier & Division 1 Cup match at Nailsea United or Watchet, and then Fry Club [December 13].”

Middlezoy Rovers 2, Stockwood Green 2

AFTER last week’s cup win, Middlezoy returned to league action on Saturday against draw specialists Stockwood Green.

The visitors looked to rough up their opponents, but with 15 minutes gone Craig Wright slotted the ball through for Jamie Temlett to lob the keeper.

Temlett’s long-range effort was well tipped over the bar, as Zoy went in 1-0 up at the break.

The hosts struggled to get going again and the visitors levelled on the hour, when their winger broke down the right and crossed for Dan Salvage to finish.

This woke Zoy up and they started to create some chances, but Callum Laird blazed over and a long-range Johnny Higgins effort struck the woodwork.

With five minutes to play, Zoy substitute Sam Hallet drilled the ball into the top corner as it was bobbling around in the box.

Hallet could have killed the game off two minutes later when he was played through, but his effort was partially saved by the keeper, and a defender got back to scramble it off the line.

This proved costly as, in added time, a long throw fell to Michael Whittington to snatch a point.

Man of the match: Aaron Whaites

Zoy, having slipped to sixth place, are at home to ninth-placed Clevedon United this coming Saturday (ko 2pm).
